Overview of The Gospel of Mark

The Gospel of Mark, written by Mark John (also known as “John” in the Book of Acts), is one of the four Gospels in the New Testament. Mark was a close companion of the disciple Peter, who referred to him as his spiritual son. Although Mark did not walk with Jesus personally, he closely followed Peter and recorded much of what Peter witnessed during Jesus’ ministry.

This Gospel is often called the “Memoirs of Peter” because of Mark’s close relationship with him. It was written between A.D. 50-70, before the Book of Acts, and is thought to have been written in Italy.

Mark’s Gospel focuses heavily on the miracles that Jesus performed throughout His ministry in Galilee, showing Jesus’ power over sickness, demons, and nature. Unlike other Gospels, Mark emphasizes Jesus’ human nature, highlighting His emotions and physical limitations. This portrayal of Jesus helps believers understand that He is familiar with the struggles and challenges of being human and can fully sympathize with our problems and situations.

Mark’s work was an important source for the Gospel of Luke, as Luke borrowed many notes from it. Overall, the Gospel of Mark presents a powerful narrative of Jesus’ ministry, filled with miracles and moments that reveal both His divinity and humanity.

OVERVIEW OF  THE GOSPEL OF MARK CHAPTER SEVEN

In this lesson, we will study Mark Chapter 7, where Jesus addresses the Pharisees’ focus on human traditions over God’s commandments. We will explore how Jesus teaches that what comes out of a person’s heart, not what goes into the body, defiles them. This chapter also highlights two powerful miracles: Jesus healing a Syrophoenician woman’s daughter and making a boy who was deaf and mute able to hear and speak. Through these stories, we learn about the importance of faith, humility, and Jesus’ power to heal.

The Pharisees find fault with the disciples for eating with unwashed hands. Jesus accused the Pharisees of being hypocrites. Mark 7:8-9  8For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. 9And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

Next, we see the faith of a Syrophoenician woman, who asks Jesus to heal her daughter possessed by a demon. Though Jesus initially tells her that His mission is to the children of Israel, she humbly responds that even dogs eat the crumbs under the table. Impressed by her faith and humility, Jesus heals her daughter.  (Note: Jesus healed the daughter because of the mother’s faith in him to heal but also because of her great humbleness.)

Lastly, Jesus makes a boy who is deaf to hear and dumb to speak. Mark 7:33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spits and touched the boy’s tongue.  34And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. 35And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.  The people were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak.  (Note, Jesus heals with a touch.)

This chapter emphasizes the power of faith, humility, and Jesus’ healing touch.

Reflection and Discussion: Something to think about.

Reflecting and revealing are essential for healing your spirit and growing into spiritual maturity. Jesus said in Mark 7:15, “There is nothing from outside a man that entering into him can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are what defile the man.” Think about the last thing you said that may have defiled you. Was it cursing, gossiping, lying, or making a false accusation? Have you repented for it?

Pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance. Repent, and if possible, ask the person you offended to forgive you. Could that person have been a family member, friend, co-worker, neighbor, spouse, child, or parent? Matthew 12:36 reminds us, “But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.”

31And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.

33And he took him aside from the multitude and put his fingers into his ears, and he spits and touched his tongue;

34And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.

35And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.
