Step One.  Start in the order of: the Gospel of John, Luke, Mark and Matthew for understanding.

The instructions are designed for accessibility and ensures the learner is not overwhelmed and confused. Post your questions in the comment section and the author will answer you. Please share your experiences and opinions.

Step Two.  Each lesson takes about 35 minutes to complete: 20 min to study the lesson and take the quiz. 15 minutes to read the Bible resource

It is recommended to read the entire post and then take the quiz before reading or listening to the bible resources. Each lesson is self-contained and includes all resources needed.

Step 3:  You should complete two lessons a day.  5 Days a week in order to complete the “45 Days to Read The Gospel Challenge in 45 days”.

There is no law that says you have to complete these lessons in 45 days. You are free to work at your own pace. Study the lesson and take the quiz in the morning, and later listen to or read the bible resources.

Step 4: Get organize with pen and paper.  Take notes.  Each lesson contains: Header Sections (Table of Contents): (1) chapter summary, (2) objectives, (3) outline, (4) reflection question,  (5) chapter highlights, (6) resources, (7) interactive quiz, and (8) a call to salvation.

Overview of The Gospel of Mark

The Gospel of Mark, written by Mark John (also known as “John” in the Book of Acts), is one of the four Gospels in the New Testament. Mark was a close companion of the disciple Peter, who referred to him as his spiritual son.

Although Mark did not walk with Jesus personally, he closely followed Peter and recorded much of what Peter witnessed during Jesus’ ministry.

This Gospel is often called the “Memoirs of Peter” because of Mark’s close relationship with him. It was written between A.D. 50-70, before the Book of Acts, and is thought to have been written in Italy.

Mark’s Gospel focuses heavily on the miracles that Jesus performed throughout His ministry in Galilee, showing Jesus’ power over sickness, demons, and nature. Unlike other Gospels, Mark emphasizes Jesus’ human nature, highlighting His emotions and physical limitations.

This portrayal of Jesus helps believers understand that He is familiar with the struggles and challenges of being human and can fully sympathize with our problems and situations.

Mark’s work was an important source for the Gospel of Luke, as Luke borrowed many notes from it. Overall, the Gospel of Mark presents a powerful narrative of Jesus’ ministry, filled with miracles and moments that reveal both His divinity and humanity.

45 Days To Read The Gospel Challenge – The Gospel of Mark Chapter Nine: All things are possible to him that believeth.”

 

OVERVIEW OF  THE GOSPEL OF MARK CHAPTER NINE

In this lesson, we explore key events in Mark Chapter 9, where Jesus reveals His divine nature, teaches the importance of faith, prayer, and fasting, and prepares His disciples for His upcoming death and resurrection.

We will also examine Jesus’ teachings on humility, care for children, and the seriousness of avoiding sin. Through these teachings, students will gain a deeper understanding of the values Jesus emphasized and how they apply to our lives today.

Jesus takes Peter, James, and John to a mountain, where He reveals His divine nature by transfiguring before them. His clothes became shining white, and the prophets Elijah and Moses appeared to talk with Him. A cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son: hear Him.”

Later, the disciples struggled to cast out an evil spirit from a child. Jesus explained that some spirits can only be driven out by prayer and fasting. The boy’s father cried out in faith, asking for help with his unbelief. Jesus cast the spirit out of the boy, teaching that all things are possible for those who believe.

Note: The father was a believer and the boy was not as he was possessed as a child.  The child could not pray for himself. Therefore, a believer’s intervention can be done for a child and one that is not against God. Prayer and fasting are important in the faith.   That is why parents are to cover their children with prayer (standing in the gap until they can come around to the Lord). Believers are to pray for the motherless and fatherless.

Jesus also foretold His death and resurrection, saying that He would be killed and rise again on the third day. This was to prepare His disciples for what was to come.

Note: Jesus is predestined. This means God knows all things before they happen. There are said to be over 2000 prophecies in the bible that actually came true and some hundreds of years in advance. The fall of Jerusalem was predicted 70 years in advance. 

Jesus exhorts his disciples to humility. The disciples talked among themselves that when Jesus is killed, who would take his place and be the greatest?  Mark 9:35KJV  “And he (Jesus) sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.”

Note: Moses was well known as a powerful man of God but he was also known for his humbleness.  God cannot direct the vain and proud.  He rejects the proud.  James 4:6  “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”

Jesus speaks of God’s love for children.  Mark 9:37KJV  “Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but for him that sent me.”

Mark 9:42 “And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone was hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.”

The disciples told Jesus that people they did not know were casting out devils in his name. The disciples told them to stop because they were not disciples. Jesus warns the disciples not to reject those who are not against them. 

Jesus takes serious offense to sin and warns that if something makes you stumble, remove it.

It is better to have one eye, hand, or foot than to go to hell.  Mark 9:50  “Salt is good: but if the salt has lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.”

Reflection and Discussion: Something to think about.

When the disciples struggled to cast out a spirit from a boy, Jesus told them, “This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:29). When you’re facing trials and tribulations and prayer doesn’t seem to be enough, have you considered fasting?

There are different ways to fast—some fast for days, while others fast for certain hours due to medical reasons. Do you practice fasting, and if so, did it make a difference in your situation? Also, if you have children, do you pray over them and with them daily, covering them in prayer? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

 1.  You will learn about the transformation of Jesus that demonstrated his divine nature outside of doing miracles. Mark 9: 1-10 KJV

And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

²And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into a high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.

2.   You will learn what Jesus teaches the disciples about casting out a dumb spirit that does not respond to prayer.  Mark 9: 16-29 KJV

 ¹⁶And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them? 

¹⁷And one of the multitudes answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;

¹⁸And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. 

¹⁹He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

¹⁸And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out, and they could not.

¹⁹He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. 

²⁰And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tares him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

 ²¹And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

²⁵When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

 ²⁶And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead. 

²⁷But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.

 3.  You will learn that Jesus foretells his own death and resurrection to prepare the disciples for what is to happen.  Mark 9:31-32 KJV

³¹For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him, and after that, he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

³²But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him. 

 

 

 4.  You will learn that Jesus requires humility in his disciples and they were to care for children.  Mark 9: 33-35 KJV

 ³³And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way? 

³⁴But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest. 

³⁵And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all. 

 ³⁶And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them, 

³⁷Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but for him that sent me. 42“And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone was hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.”

 

 

 5.  You will learn that Jesus does not reject anyone that is not against him.  Mark 9: 38-40, KJV

³⁸And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followed not us: and we forbad him because he followed not us.

³⁹But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

⁴⁰For he that is not against us is on our part.     

      

6.  You will learn why Jesus warns disciples to remove anything from them or around them that causes them to stumble and sin. Mark 9:43-50.

⁴³And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

⁴⁴Where their worm died not, and the fire is not quenched.

⁴⁵And if thy foot offends thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

⁴⁶Where their worm died not, and the fire is not quenched.

⁴⁷And if thine eye offends thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

⁴⁸Where their worm died not, and the fire is not quenched.

⁴⁹For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

⁵⁰Salt is good: but if the salt has lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
