Psalms 75:6 – 75:7  6 For promotion come neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. 7 But God is the judge: he puts down one, and sets up another.

As we reflect on two significant moments in history—Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the inauguration of Donald J. Trump—it’s fitting to consider how leadership, cultural unity, and honoring God are deeply connected. While these events represent vastly different purposes, they are united by a common thread: the responsibility of leaders and nations to serve God and uphold justice.

Martin Luther King Jr.: A Vision of Unity and Justice

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously championed a vision of a multicultural world where justice, equality, and love were foundational. His dream, rooted in the Gospel, reflects God’s call to all humanity: “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” (Mark 12:31, KJV). King’s leadership was not merely about social change; it was about aligning the nation’s moral compass with God’s Word.

He drew inspiration from scriptures like Amos 5:24 (KJV): “But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.” His fight for justice and unity mirrored God’s heart for the oppressed and His desire for all people, regardless of race, to live in harmony.

Here are three major accomplishments of Martin Luther King Jr. that positively affected everyone, including his advocacy for fair wages:

1. The Civil Rights Act of 1964

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s leadership and activism played a pivotal role in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, one of the most significant pieces of legislation in U.S. history. This act:

Prohibited discrimination in public places, such as restaurants, schools, and workplaces, based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

Ended segregation in public facilities, making equality a legal standard in everyday life.

Opened up job opportunities for minorities and women by banning employment discrimination.

This legislation not only impacted African Americans but also laid the groundwork for fair treatment and opportunities for people of all races, genders, and backgrounds.

2. The Fair Housing Act of 1968

Dr. King’s tireless efforts also contributed to the passage of the Fair Housing Act, which became law shortly after his assassination in 1968. This act:

Prohibited discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin, or sex.

Addressed systemic housing inequalities that prevented minorities from accessing safe and affordable homes.

Paved the way for greater economic and social mobility for marginalized groups, benefiting society as a whole by promoting integration and fairness in housing markets.

3.  Advancing Voting Rights

Dr. King played a pivotal role in the modern civil rights movement, which culminated in securing stronger voting rights protections. His leadership in the Selma Voting Rights Movement directly led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Here’s how:

Selma to Montgomery March (1965):
King and other leaders organized a peaceful protest march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, to draw attention to the systemic disenfranchisement of African Americans. The march faced brutal opposition, particularly on “Bloody Sunday” (March 7, 1965), when marchers were attacked by police on the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Bringing National Attention:
King’s ability to mobilize nationwide support and highlight the injustices faced by Black voters put immense pressure on the federal government to act. His speeches and advocacy emphasized the importance of voting as a fundamental right to achieve racial equality and justice.

Passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965:
King’s efforts, alongside those of other civil rights leaders and organizations, directly influenced President Lyndon B. Johnson and Congress to pass this landmark legislation. The Act prohibited discriminatory practices like literacy tests and poll taxes and empowered the federal government to oversee voter registration in states with a history of racial discrimination.

MLK’s Legacy in Voting Rights

While Dr. King did not create the legal foundation for voting rights, his leadership was instrumental in breaking down the barriers that had long prevented African Americans from fully exercising that right. His work ensured that the promise of the Fifteenth Amendment could finally become a reality for millions of disenfranchised citizens.

Donald Trump’s Achievements and Biblical Leadership

As of January 19, 2025, Donald Trump is the president-elect of the United States, set to be inaugurated as the 47th president on January 20, 2025.  He was previously the 45th president.   Donald Trump’s presidency included policies that directly impacted minority communities.

Donald J. Trump, before becoming the 45th President of the United States, was a larger-than-life celebrity and a global real estate mogul-building sky scrapper buildings. Born and raised in Queens, New York.
Donald Trump owned several beauty pageants. He was the co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization, which included the Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA pageants for two decades before selling it.

His presidency was marked by efforts to bring a business-minded approach to governance, often referring to his history of “making deals” to shape policies and economic initiatives.

1. The First Step Act (2018)

The First Step Act is a criminal justice reform bill that aimed to address systemic inequities in sentencing, particularly affecting African Americans. Key provisions included:

Reducing mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenses.

Allowing inmates to earn credits for early release through participation in rehabilitation programs.

Retroactively applying the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010, which reduced sentencing disparities between crack and powder cocaine offenses—a disparity that had disproportionately affected African Americans.

This policy was widely praised for its efforts to reform the justice system and reduce mass incarceration, which had significantly impacted minority communities.

2. Funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)

Under Trump’s administration, there was an unprecedented level of federal funding allocated to HBCUs. In 2019, he signed the Fostering Undergraduate Talent by Unlocking Resources for Education (FUTURE) Act, which permanently provided $255 million annually to HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions. Trump also established the White House Initiative on HBCUs, ensuring these schools had better access to federal programs and resources.

These measures were acknowledged as a significant investment in the education and advancement of African American students.

Both policies showcased efforts to address issues that had long affected African American communities, from education to criminal justice reform.

3.  Opportunity Zones (2017)

One major policy enacted by Donald Trump that benefited Black businesses and communities was the creation of Opportunity Zones, established through the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. These zones were designed to spur economic development and job creation in distressed communities, many of which had high concentrations of African Americans and other minorities.

Key benefits included:

Tax Incentives for Investors: Investors received significant tax breaks for investing in businesses and real estate development in designated low-income areas.

Access to Capital for Businesses: The initiative encouraged private investment in Black-owned businesses and startups within these zones, providing much-needed funding for growth and job creation.

Economic Revitalization: Many Opportunity Zones were located in predominantly Black communities, offering new opportunities for entrepreneurship, homeownership, and local job growth.

The program aimed to bring private investments into historically underserved areas, potentially boosting minority-owned businesses and economic mobility.

In conclusion, Donald Trump’s career and presidency reflect a complex legacy of influence, both as a business leader and as a policymaker. From his beginnings as a real estate mogul and global celebrity to his role as the 45th and now the 47th President of the United States, Trump has left a mark on both politics and society.

His administration implemented policies such as the First Step Act, unprecedented funding for HBCUs, and the Opportunity Zones initiative, which were designed to address long-standing issues affecting African American and minority communities.  As Trump prepares to take office once again, his policies and leadership will continue to shape discussions around economic growth, criminal justice reform, and education in underserved communities.

The Biblical Call for Nations to Honor God

However, the Bible sets a high standard for leaders: they must not only serve their people but also honor God in their actions. Proverbs 29:2 (KJV) reminds us, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked bear rule, the people mourn.”

Throughout Scripture, God makes it clear that nations and leaders who honor Him will prosper, while those who reject His commandments face judgment. For instance, the city of Jericho was brought to ruin because of its idolatry and refusal to follow God’s ways (Joshua 6:20).

Similarly, Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for their wickedness and lack of repentance (Genesis 19:24-25). These accounts serve as warnings: leaders and nations must prioritize godly principles, or they risk facing dire consequences.

The Bible emphasizes the need for humility and dependence on God in governance. 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV) declares, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Reflection and Action Steps

As we honor Dr. King and Donald Trump’s  Inauguration, we should reflect on past presidencies, let us pray for leaders to be guided by biblical truth and a commitment to justice. Consider these steps:

Pray for Leaders: Ask God to guide current and future leaders in righteousness. (1 Timothy 2:1-2)

Seek Justice: Support initiatives that uplift the oppressed and align with biblical principles.

Honor God: In your own life, strive to be an example of faith and righteousness.

In conclusion, both Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision and Donald Trump’s presidency highlight the importance of leadership that honors God and serves people. Let us remember the lessons of history, the warnings of Scripture, and the promise of blessing for those who seek God’s ways. As Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God” (Matthew 5:9, KJV).

We as the people of the United States must work together to build the nation. We could be entering wars or economic standoffs or a civil war.  The majority have voted for the President of the United States.  A nation divided cannot stand. A house divided cannot stand.  If you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.
