Before Starting this Course:
Overview of The Gospel of John:
The Gospel of John is written by one of Jesus Christ’s disciples, John, the son of Zebedee. This Gospel is 21 Chapters long. John is described as the “Disciple of Whom Jesus loved”. It has been determined by biblical scholars that John wrote The Gospel of John (also known as “According to John”).
It was written around A.D. 80-90, about 50 years after he witnesses Jesus’ earthly ministry under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and as an eyewitness in composing the gospel. He is not John the Baptist. However, in this book, John the Baptist is discussed.
The Gospel of John explains who Jesus Christ is before creation. It establishes his deity as Creator of the World, The Father (I AM), and is the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of God in the flesh.
Its purpose is to explain that even though Jesus is the Creator and God (I AM), believers are to understand that Jesus is the Son of God that came in the flesh and yet while we were sinners, died for our sins and rose again to become Savior of the World-reconnecting us to God. That is why we pray to the father in Jesus Christ’s name.
Defeating death and sin by the shedding of his blood and life, Jesus gives the gift of everlasting life with repentance. That by believing you may have life in his name (20:31) John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
God is omnipresent meaning he can be in more than one place at the same time. He can be on earth (flesh) and in heaven (spirit) at the same time.
Revelation 19:6 “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thundering, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”
Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son, is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
45 Days To Read the Gospel Challenge: Gospel of John Chapter Five: Jesus Proves Himself to be the Son of God: Testimony of John, His works (miracles) and by the Witness of the Father in the Scriptures.
Overview of the Gospel of Chapter Five
In John Chapter 5, Jesus heals a man who had been sick for 38 years. This healing happened on the Sabbath, a holy day when no work was allowed.
Breaking the Sabbath could lead to death. Healing was considered work, but Jesus showed that doing good was more important.
He declared that He is the Son of God and has authority over the Sabbath.
Jesus explained that the Sabbath was made to help people, not to burden them. He didn’t get rid of the Sabbath but taught that it should now be observed through grace, not strict rules.
Jesus also proved who He is through the testimony of John the Baptist, His miracles, and the witness of God the Father in the scriptures.

Objectives Chapter Five (What you will learn)

2. You will learn why Jesus defied the law of the land (traditions) on the Sabbath to demonstrate his glory and grace.
3. You will be able to identify the three reasons the Jews were so angry with Jesus, that they sought to prosecute him.
4. You will learn the three ways Jesus offered proof that he was the Son of God.
Outline for Chapter Five:
A. Jesus goes to the pool of Bethesda and heals a man on the Sabbath. Jesus commanded the man ” Take up your bed and walk.”
B. The Jews find fault – They wanted to slay Jesus because he had broken the Sabbath, claimed that God was his father, thereby making himself equal to God.
C. Jesus answers them, declaring himself to be the Son of God and proving it by the testimony of John, his works, and by the witness of the Father in the Scriptures.
a. Son of God quickens people from the dead. He calls them by name and they rise up because he has life in him as the father does.

Highlights of the Gospel of John: Chapter Five
Highlights of the Gospel of John: Chapter Five
Jesus heals a man on the Sabbath
John 5:1-12 KJV 1 After this there was a feast of the Jews: and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
3In these lay, a great multitude of impotent folk, of the blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
4For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
5And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
6When Jesus saw him lie and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
7The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
8Jesus saith unto him, Rise to take up thy bed and walk.
9And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
10The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
11He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
12Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
13And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
The Jews find fault – They wanted to slay Jesus because he had broken the Sabbath, claimed that God was his father, thereby making himself equal to God.
John 5: 14-20 KJV 14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
15The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
16And, therefore, did the Jews persecute Jesus and sought to slay him because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
17But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
18Therefore the Jews sought more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal to God.
19Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
20For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
Father gave all judgment to the son so people will honor him as the Son of God.
John 5: 21-23 21Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son
22For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son;
23That all men should honor the Son, even they honor the Father. He that honoureth, not the Son honoureth not the Father.
Jesus answers them, declaring himself to be the Son of God and proving it by the testimony of John, his works, and by the witness of the Father in the Scriptures.
John 5: 21-24, 21For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them, even so, the Son quickeneth whom he will.
22Verily, verily, I say unto you. The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
23That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoureth, not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
24Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation, but is passed from death unto life.
25Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
26For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself:
27And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
28Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
30I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
31If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
32There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
33Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.
34But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
35He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
36But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
37And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
38And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
The John and the scripture witness to who Jesus is. You must give yourself to him for eternal life.
John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
John:40And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
41. But I have a greater witness than of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
42But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
43I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
44How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
46For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
47But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

Call to salvation:
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Romans 10:9-10 9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
John 3:5-6 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
