Nehemiah 8:10 (KJV):
“Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
Today is the second day of the Kick Off, 30 Day Spiritual Tune-up. Get your paper, pens and your bible (for reference) as we embark on a spiritual journey to get refreshed and focus for 2025.
This December, we’re exploring into the powerful theme of Love and Truth—the foundation of our faith. Jesus said, “God is Love”, and He also declared, John 1:17 KJV “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”
Nehemiah 8:10 KJV encourages God’s people to embrace joy and celebrate His provision, even in the midst of challenges. The verse reflects a moment when the Israelites, having rediscovered the Law of God, were moved to repentance and sorrow. However, Nehemiah redirects their focus, reminding them that the day is holy—a time to rejoice in the Lord’s goodness and mercy.
He calls them to enjoy life’s blessings, share with those in need, and find strength in the joy that comes from God. This joy is not merely emotional happiness; it is a profound, spiritual strength that empowers believers to endure and rise above life’s hardships, anchored in the assurance of God’s presence and faithfulness.
Life can be full of challenges, difficult people, and unchanging circumstances, but as Christians, our joy doesn’t depend on our surroundings—it is rooted in the Lord. Nehemiah 8:10 KJV reminds us that God’s joy is our strength, even when the world tries to pull us down.
This joy isn’t just happiness; it is a deep, spiritual wellspring that keeps us steady through life’s storms. Jesus Christ has paid the ultimate price for our freedom from sin, granting us reconciliation with God and a reason to celebrate abundant living.
Bible Story: Paul and Silas in Prison (Acts 16:25-34 KJV)
Paul and Silas were unjustly imprisoned, their feet locked in stocks. Instead of despairing, they prayed and sang praises to God in the middle of the night. Their joy in the Lord was unshaken, and their worship led to a miraculous earthquake that opened the prison doors. More importantly, their faith influenced the jailer, who gave his life to Christ and brought salvation to his household.
This story teaches us that even when circumstances remain difficult, the joy of the Lord empowers us to rise above and be a light to others.
Consider Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor and author of Man’s Search for Meaning. Despite enduring horrific conditions in a concentration camp, he found strength in choosing hope and purpose. Frankl’s perspective reflects a spiritual truth: joy and inner peace stem from focusing on what cannot be taken away—our connection to God and His promises.
Action Steps for Keeping Joy
Keep Scripture Visible
Write inspiring verses on Post-it notes or stickers and place them in your bathroom, office, or bedroom, computer or books. Let God’s Word refresh your heart daily.
Deuteronomy 11:20 KJV “And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates:”
Watch Positive Media
Feed your spirit with uplifting Christmas movies, songs, and comedy. Laughter and joy – renew your strength and focus on God’s goodness. Get away from current events for a minute.
Romans 10:17 KJV “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Invest in Relationships with gratitude
Spend quality time with loved ones. Take a walk, play a game, or share a meal. Tell your children or family members something positive daily. Celebrate small joys and cherish the moments.
Matthew 22: 36-40 KJV 36Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Reflection or Journal Question
Are you letting life’s struggles rob you of joy? Remember, Jesus Christ has already overcome the world (John 16:33). Choose to live in His victory, leaning on God’s strength to sustain you. Let the joy of the Lord become your refuge and song, guiding you through any circumstance.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the joy that strengthens us. Help us to keep our eyes on You and remember the freedom we have through Jesus Christ. May Your joy fill our hearts and overflow into the lives of those around us. In Jesus name. Amen.
