Overview of The Gospel of Luke

Apostle Luke, a Gentile and a physician, wrote this Gospel and the Book of Acts.  Luke’s work is assumed to be written in AD 60-62 during the time Paul was in jail.  His works were dedicated to Theophilus, a Roman dignitary.  Luke gives an ordered account of the events of Jesus’s life but not necessarily in order.  His primary research is based on eyewitnesses, disciples, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Luke knew the disciples personally.  He traveled with Paul most of the time. However, he also used other disciples’ work in his research, such as Mark’s work. A lot of Luke’s work included the Gospel of Mark. However, this Gospel gives many accounts of Jesus’s healing ministry because Luke was a physician himself.

Luke alone reported unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and the annunciation to Mary.  He emphasized the central role of women, children, Gentiles, Samaritans, rich people, sinners, and outcasts in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Luke proposed to narrate the ministry of Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ’s mission dedicated to the saving of sinners and his progression to the cross to become Savior of the World.

45 Days to Reading the Gospel. Gospel of Luke Chapter 17 – Forgive Brothers or Sisters Unlimited Times Then There Can Be No Offenses

Summary of The Gospel of Luke Chapter 17.

In this lesson, we explore Jesus’ teachings on forgiveness, faith, humility, gratitude, and His warning about the second coming. You will learn how Jesus calls His disciples to live a life of unending forgiveness, humble service, and readiness for His return. Through parables and miracles, this chapter offers deep insights into how we are to treat others and stay close to God in our daily lives.

Jesus begins by teaching His disciples not to intentionally offend others, especially children. He emphasizes the seriousness of causing offense, saying it would be better for such a person to have a millstone tied around their neck and be thrown into the sea.

Jesus also instructs His disciples to forgive endlessly. If a brother or sister offends you, forgive them—even if they repent multiple times in a day. Where there is forgiveness, offenses cannot remain.

The apostles, feeling the weight of this teaching, ask Jesus to increase their faith. In response, Jesus tells them that even faith as small as a mustard seed can accomplish great things, like uprooting trees with a simple command. He teaches them to remain humble, reminding them that after fulfilling God’s commands, they should not boast but say, “We are unprofitable servants; we have only done our duty.” This reflects the attitude of humility Jesus desires in His followers.

Next, Jesus encounters ten lepers who cry out to Him for mercy. He instructs them to go show themselves to the priest, and as they obey, they are healed. Yet only one—a Samaritan—returns to give thanks and praise to God. Jesus questions the absence of the other nine and blesses the Samaritan, saying, “Your faith has made you whole.” This miracle teaches the importance of gratitude and returning to God with thanksgiving.

Finally, Jesus teaches about His second coming. He warns that people will be caught off guard, just as they were in the days of Noah. Many will be so consumed with their daily lives—marrying, eating, drinking—that they will miss the signs of their deliverance.

He urges His followers to watch and be ready, explaining that when He returns, some will be taken while others will be left, symbolizing the separation of the faithful from the unfaithful.

This chapter teaches us about the power of forgiveness, the importance of faith and humility, and the need for constant vigilance as we await the return of Jesus Christ.

Chapter Highlights of Gospel According to Luke – Chapter Seventeen KJV)  Answers to Objectives and Activity-Questions

A.  How many times are we to forgive others.  Luke 17:1-4  KJV

Luke 17: 1-4  1Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offenses will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!

2It was better for him that a millstone was hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea than that he should offend one of these little ones.

3Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.

4And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.

B.  A faith bigger than that of a mustard seed has great power.  Luke 17:5-6.  KJV

Luke 17:5-6   5And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.

6And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

C.  Being obedient or doing God’s command is a reward in itself.  Luke 17: 7-10  KJV

7But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he comes from the field, Go and sit down to meat?

8And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink?

9Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not.

10So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

D.  God views praise, thanksgiving, and gratitude as glorifying God.  Luke 17: 10-19  KJV

11And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

12And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:

13And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.

14And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.

15And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,

16And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

16And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

17And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?

18There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.

19And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

E.  The second coming: Stay close to God as no one knows the time.  Luke 17:20-27 KJV

20And when he was demanded of the Pharisees when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:

21Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

22And he said unto the disciples, The days will come when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it

23And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them

24For as the lightning, that lightened out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.

25But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected by this generation.

26And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.

27They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

28Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built;

29But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

30Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.

31In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.

32Remember Lot’s wife. 33Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it, and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

34I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.

35Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

36Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

37And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.
