Overview of The Gospel of Matthew

The Gospel of Matthew was written by the apostle Matthew, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples. Matthew was a former tax collector, called by Jesus to follow Him. His Gospel is believed to have been written between 50-70 AD, and it is the first book in the New Testament, even though it may not have been the first Gospel written. Matthew’s account emphasizes that Jesus is the promised Messiah and King, fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies.

Matthew’s Gospel begins with a genealogy that traces Jesus’ lineage back to Abraham and King David, highlighting Jesus’ royal and Jewish heritage. It then moves into the story of Jesus’ miraculous birth, His baptism by John the Baptist, and the start of His ministry.

Mary and her husband Joseph were both from the lineage of King David.  Matthew 1:17  “So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.”  Matthew tells of a prophetic word that told of Jesus’ birth.  

Matthew 1:23  “Behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”  It is interesting to note that Joseph wanted to divorce Mary quietly because of her pregnancy.  But an angel came to him and verified that Mary was pregnant by the Holy Ghost.  Therefore, Joseph stayed married to Mary and did not consummate the marriage until Jesus Christ was born. 

Note: Jesus Christ is a name translated in the English versions. It is accepted by God. For this purpose these studies are on the English speaking version.   Philippians 2:9 KJV  “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name:” 

There are many names people call Jesus but it is only one name to be saved by. If you mispronounce other names (thinking that is the original name) then you are not calling on the Lord. 

It is known that what we pronounce today is not the way it was pronounced then.  Develop a personal relationship with the Lord and you will know he answers to the name name  Jesus Christ (the blood sacrifice).  He is the God of the living.  Psalms 100:3 KJV ³ Know ye that the Lord He is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

The Gospel of Matthew is known for including many of Jesus’ key teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount, where He teaches about love, humility, prayer, and the Kingdom of God. Throughout the Gospel, Jesus performs miracles, heals the sick, and casts out demons, showing His divine authority.

Matthew also places a strong emphasis on Jesus’ role as a teacher and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. He frequently references the Scriptures to show how Jesus’ life and mission align with what was foretold about the Messiah. The Gospel also includes Jesus’ parables, teachings on discipleship, and warnings about the final judgment.

The story of Jesus’ crucifixion, death, and resurrection is the heart of the Gospel. Matthew ends with the Great Commission, where Jesus commands His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, spreading the message of salvation.

In summary, the Gospel of Matthew presents Jesus as the promised Messiah, the fulfillment of God’s promises, and the King of all nations, whose life, death, and resurrection bring salvation to the world.

OVERVIEW OF  THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

In Matthew 26, we learn about the key events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus, showing His obedience to God’s plan despite knowing the suffering He would face. This chapter also highlights themes of betrayal, sacrifice, and prayer.

The rulers plot to capture and kill Jesus, and He prepares His disciples for the crucifixion He had foretold. A woman anoints Jesus’ head with expensive ointment, which He says honors Him for His burial. Jesus blesses her act of devotion, declaring that it will be remembered wherever the Gospel is preached.

Meanwhile, Judas conspires to betray Jesus, identifying Him to the religious leaders with a kiss. Jesus celebrates the Passover with His disciples, instituting the Lord’s Supper (Communion), asking them to do this in remembrance of His coming sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins.

Later, in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prays to God, asking if it is possible to avoid the suffering ahead, but submits to God’s will. He finds His disciples asleep and warns them to stay awake and pray to avoid temptation.

Jesus is arrested and brought before the high priest, where He is sentenced to death. During this time, Peter denies Jesus three times, just as Jesus had predicted, and is filled with shame for his actions.

This chapter shows that Jesus understands human suffering and obedience to God’s will, reminding us to pray in times of temptation and trust in God’s plan for our lives, as seen in Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV): “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

Note:  Here we can be assured that Jesus suffered and is very well aware of human sufferings and problems.  Even so, we are to be obedient.  Jeremiah 29:11 KJV  “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”   Jesus says to pray to avoid temptation.

Reflection and Discussion: Something to think about.

The Last Supper or Communion was the last time Jesus drank wine with the disciples before he was to be crucified.  It is the ritual that all believers do at least once a month in remembrance of the finished work on the cross. 

Luke 22: 19-20  KJV  ¹⁹And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 

²⁰Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. 

 Matthew 26:28 KJV   “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

 3.  Judas conspires against him.   Matthew 26: 14-16 KJV

¹⁴Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, 

¹⁵And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. 

¹⁶And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.  

 

 4.  Jesus keeps the Passover;   Matthew 26: 17-18 KJV

¹⁷Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the Passover? 

¹⁸And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at thy house with my disciples. 

 

 

 5. Jesus declares the Lord’s supper;   Matthew 26:  19-33 KJV

¹⁹And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them, and they made ready the Passover.

²⁰Now when the evening came, he sat down with the twelve.  

²¹And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 

²²And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? 

²³And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. 

²⁴The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. 

²⁵Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said. 

²⁶And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

 6. Jesus prays in the garden;   Matthew 26: 36-46 KJV

³⁶Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. 

³⁷And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. 

³⁸Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. 

³⁹And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

 ⁴⁰And he cometh unto the disciples, and finds them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? 

⁴¹Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

 7. Jesus is brought before the high priest and sentenced to death.   Matthew 26: 47-66 KJV

⁴⁷And while he yet spoke, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

 ⁴⁸Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.

 ⁴⁹And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.

 ⁵⁰And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.

 ⁵¹And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest’s, and smote off his ear. 

⁵²Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

 ⁵³Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?  

⁵⁴But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? 

⁵⁵In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.

⁵⁷And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

 8. Peter denies Jesus.   Matthew 26: 67-75  KJV

⁶⁷Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands, 

⁶⁸Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee? 

⁶⁹Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also was with Jesus of Galilee.

⁷⁰But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest. 

⁷¹And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.

 ⁷²And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. 

⁷³And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech betrayed thee.

 ⁷⁴Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.

 ⁷⁵And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out and wept bitterly.
