Overview of The Gospel of John
One of Jesus Christ’s disciples, John, the son of Zebedee, wrote the Gospel of John, which is 21 chapters long. John is known as the “Disciple of Whom Jesus Loved.” Biblical scholars believe that John wrote this gospel around A.D. 80-90, about 50 years after witnessing Jesus’ earthly ministry.
John was an eyewitness to the events he describes in the gospel, and he wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. (Note that John is not the same person as John the Baptist, who is discussed in this book.)
The Gospel of John explains who Jesus Christ is before creation, revealing his divinity as the Creator of the world, the Father (I AM), and the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of God in the flesh. Its purpose is to explain that even though Jesus is the Creator and God, believers should understand that he is also the Son of God who came in the flesh.
While we were still sinners, Jesus died for our sins and rose again to become the Savior of the world, reconnecting us to God. This is why we pray to the Father in Jesus Christ’s name.
By shedding his blood and sacrificing his life, Jesus defeated death and sin and gives us the gift of everlasting life through repentance and forgiveness. As John 3:16 KJV says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
God is omnipresent, meaning that he can be in more than one place at the same time. He can be on earth (flesh) and in heaven (spirit) at the same time. Revelation 19:6 KJV says, “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”
Isaiah 9:6 KJV“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son, is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Before Starting this Course:
Overview: The Gospel of John Chapter One:
Welcome to our lesson on John Chapter 1. In this lesson, we will explore the powerful message of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. We will learn about John the Baptist’s testimony, the identity of Jesus as the Son of God, and the significance of His role as the creator of the world.
This class will provide a clear understanding of who Jesus is and why He came to save us. Join us as we study how Jesus was both God and man, sent to bring light into a world of darkness.
In John Chapter 1, we learn about John the Baptist, a man sent by God to prepare the way for Jesus Christ. John the Baptist’s mission was to tell others about Jesus, the Son of God, who was coming to save the world. He also praised God from the time he was a newborn, a miraculous event that many talked about.
This chapter explains that Jesus is the creator of everything. Before He was born as a man, He already existed with God. Jesus is the prophesied Messiah, born of a virgin, who came to save us. The prophets, especially Isaiah, spoke about the coming of the Messiah, who would die for the nation to save it.
The Bible teaches us that Jesus is the Word, meaning He is both God and man. He was with God at the beginning of time, and everything was made through Him. Jesus brought life and light into the world, but many people did not recognize Him or believe in Him when He came.
In John 1:1-5 (KJV), we are reminded that Jesus is the Word of God who was there in the beginning, and in Him was life—the light for all people. This light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it. Even though the world was made through Him, many did not receive Him, as stated in John 1:10-11 (KJV).
This chapter helps us understand that Jesus is not only the Son of God but also the Savior of the world, sent to bring hope and salvation to all who believe in Him.
Editor’s Note: In many modern Bible translations based on the King James Version, John 1:3 is often phrased as “All things were made through Him.” However, the 1907 King James Version, along with trusted sources like King James Bible Online, retains the original wording: “All things were made by Him.” Some translations even expand this to say, “All things were made by Him, through Him, and for Him,” highlighting Christ’s complete and central role in creation.
Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son, is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

A. Identify the Divine Nature of Jesus Christ: before his human birth
B. Understand Jesus as the Word of God: Creator
C. Explain the Light of Christ: The “True Light” of men that offer hope and guidance in a sinful world.
Outline of Chapter One of the Gospel of John

John 1:1-5: Jesus is the Word, the Creator, and the Light of the world.
John 1:9-11: Jesus is the true light who came into the world.
John 1:14: Jesus became flesh and dwelt among us.
B. Witness of Jesus Christ: John The Baptist
John 1:6-8: John the Baptist testifies that he is not the Messiah, but that he has come to prepare the way for the One who is greater than him.
John 1:15-27: John the Baptist identifies Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

C. Calling of Peter, Andrew, and others. A man confesses Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and Jesus talks of heaven to him.
John 1:35-42: Jesus calls Peter and Andrew to be his disciples.
John 1:43-49: Jesus calls Philip and Nathanael to be his disciples.
John 1:50: Nathanael confesses that Jesus is the Son of God and the King of Israel.
John 1:51: Jesus tells Nathanael that he will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.
Reflection and Discussion Questions: Something to think about.
The fact that Jesus was willing to die for our sins shows us how much he loves us. He was not willing to simply let us suffer the consequences of our own actions. He was willing to take the punishment upon himself so that we could be forgiven. This sacrifice is not just a historical event. It is something that has personal implications for each of us. If we repent of our sins and turn to Jesus Christ in faith, we can be forgiven and receive the gift of everlasting life.
A. What does it mean to you that Jesus Christ came to earth as a human being?
B. Why do you think Jesus Christ died on the cross?
C. How does the sacrifice of Jesus Christ change the way you see God?
D. How does the sacrifice of Jesus Christ change the way you see yourself?
E. What does it mean to you to repent of your sins and turn to Jesus Christ in faith?

Chapter Highlights of Gospel of John – Chapter One (KJV) — Readings from the King James Bible –
Answer to objectives and activity questions.
Identify the Divine Nature of Jesus Christ: before his human birth: Jesus Christ is the Word that Became Flesh. The Word was God. Jesus Christ is the Son of God (Flesh) and He is God (IAM) before creation.
1. In the beginning, was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2. The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made.
Note: In many bibles different from the King James, this scripture is quoted: John 1:3 3All things are made through him. However, the 1907 KJV bible linked to above, as well as King James Bible Online, states all things were made by him. Some versions of various bibles state, “all things were made by him, through him, and for him”.
4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not.
John is identified as a man sent from God to bear witness to Jesus . Jesus is the true light that all men through him might believe.
6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9That was the true Light, which lights every man that come into the world.
John 1: 10-11 John testifies that Jesus is the Word made flesh and dwelt among us, Jesus is the creator of the world,
10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
John 1: 12-17 The Word was made Flesh.
12. But as many as received him, to them gave he the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name;
13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God
14And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth.
15John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spoke. He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
16And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
17For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
John the Baptist identifies himself as the “voice crying in the wilderness”, John identifies Jesus as God’s “Only Begotten Son.”
18No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
19And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
20And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.
21And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
22Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
23He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.
24And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
John the Baptist who was great in the land declares Jesus is preferred before him: He greets Jesus as “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” and testifies that Jesus is the Son of God.
24And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
25And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?
26John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
27He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
28These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29The next day John see Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
30This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
31And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
32And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
33And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptize with the Holy Ghost.
34And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
35Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;
36And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
**Note: John The Baptist baptized with water but Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit. Believers are commanded by Jesus to baptize in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy spirit.
Matthew 28:19 KJV “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”
***The Mosaic Law, practiced in Judaism, is often referred to as the Law of Moses. These written laws are found in the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, known as the Torah.
In Christianity, the laws are in the Old Testament of the King James Bible.
Jesus fulfilled these laws through grace, and as a result, freeing believers from the need to follow “The Law” for salvation. Jesus is the New Testament.
However, many religions that do not honor Jesus Christ still observe the Mosaic or Torah laws today. This what Jesus meant when he said Moses brought the Law but I came with Grace and Truth.
**Note: Matthew 5:17 KJV “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”
Romans 6:14 KJV 14For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Matthew 22:36 KJV 36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
***Note: Romans 10: 9-10 KJV 9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Offer of Salvation: 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Calling of Peter, Andrew, and others. A man confesses Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and Jesus talks of heaven to him.
37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
38Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?
39He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
40One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
41He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messiah, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
42And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jonah: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
43The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.
44Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
45Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
46And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
48Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.
49Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
50Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
51And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
