How Can You Tell If Someone Really Loves You?

It’s easy to tell if someone likes you but love is another story. I think people get the two confused along with lust. :). There are three things to learn in order to determine if a person truly loves you:  truth, commitment, and communication

1John4:8 “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” 

Do they tell the truth? That is the first thing to learn about a person. Do they tell the truth 99% of the time as part of their character trait? If not, they may have mental issues. Contrary to what many believe, it is not love that brings honesty. It’s truth that birth love. Some think if a person loves them, they will not lie to them, even though they lie to everyone else. If there is no truth, there is no true love.  The same thing is true for you as well.  It is often said, to be successful, there is one rule to follow: Do not lie to yourself. 

Truth must exist before love can unite, for truth generates love.  Love must stand the test of truth in order to last.

In the following passage, Jesus spoke to a group of people who did not believe in his teachings. He told them that they had no truth in them so they did not believe the truth because the father of liars is Satan.  John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. (KJV)

Secondly, does this person live in the real world (ups and downs) and understands commitment? Can they solve their own problems? As a couple, can you solve your relationship problems without blowing everything up? Most couples whose relationships last many years and withstands all types of weather, say to themselves, “I’m going to stay with this person no matter what.” They have a spirit of truth and make the commitment. Can you see PROOF of that in friend’s life? If not, date longer or not at all. 

Both of you should be committed to God, who is bigger than yourselves,  because the world is full of disorder and confusion that test many relationships over and over again. Jesus Christ is also a forgiver of sins. Build a firm foundation by believing in Jesus Christ.  Make a commitment not to get involved in an unequally yoked relationship. It may not seem important but two years later, once the kids start to come, it will make all the difference.  The honey moon phase will be over.

The third thing, communicate. You can’t say a person loves you or you love them if you don’t know anything about each other.  You should truly walk in agreement as much as possible. How people communicate is “One rule does not fit all”.  Its important that “you two get it and understand each other”.  Can you talk to each other with a level head when you disagree on something? Do you listen to each other and not interrupt to show that what the person is saying is important?

Is the person’s definition of love the same as yours? If you are needy is that person needy at the same time? If not, is there respect, discipline, and patience? What do you expect from the relationship? Can you meet each other emotional needs? Can you agree?  Do you like kids? What faith do you have?  What are your credit scores? Where do you see yourself five years from now?  What are your career goals? How do you plan to make money in order to live?  Do you act the same in front of others as behind closed doors? How do you feel about your parents, sisters and brothers and childhood?. What are each other pet peeves?  How do you feel about sex? Is it important to you?  Do each of you actively take care of your health? Can you trust each other with each other secrets?

Mark 12:29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: 30And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 31And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandments greater than these.

Remember, what is today can change next year because people change and grow. If you think all three character traits are present: truth, commitment, and communication, there is one thing left to do. Ask them, Do you love me? Believe the answer. It is that simple.** Good luck and much love.
