You can’t live in peace while holding yourself hostage to the past.
Bible Story
John : 8 KJV And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, 4They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
When the woman caught in adultery stood before Jesus, her accusers were ready to stone her. But Jesus said, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone.” One by one they left. Jesus looked at her and said, “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” John 8:11 KJV
Real-World Example
After his teenage mistake led to jail time, Antonio couldn’t forgive himself even years after release. When he joined a Bible study, he read this verse and wept. “If Jesus forgave me,” he said, “why am I still punishing myself?” The day he believed that truth, his freedom became real.
Reflection Question
Are you still serving time in your mind for a sin God has already forgiven?
Amazing Grace Lyrics (HYMN) Public Domain
John Newton (1725–1807), the author of Amazing Grace, was once a slave owner. After finding Christ, he went through deep sorrow and shame over the sins of his past. In that season of conviction and the painful feeling of God’s face being hidden, he began to write Christian hymns. Amazing Grace became the most well-known of them all. (Source: Hymnary.org)
It’s strange how life works, but it truly is what we do for Christ that will last—in this life and the next. I grew up singing this song and hearing so many beautiful versions of it. It wasn’t until about ten years ago that I learned Newton had been involved in slavery. I’m sure he had much to answer for. God forgives, but we still reap what we sow.
1 Amazing grace (how sweet the sound)
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.
2 ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!
3 Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come:
’tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.

Romans 10:9-109That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
John 3:5-65Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7
