Matthew 22:37(KJV): “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”

Explanation of the Verse

Jesus spoke these words when asked, “Which is the great commandment in the law?” His answer was simple yet profound: the greatest command is to love God fully—with heart, soul, and mind. This kind of love is not half-hearted. It calls us to be devoted to God in our emotions (heart), in our spiritual being (soul), and in our thoughts and choices (mind). When our love for God is whole, our lives naturally overflow with love for others.

Real-World Example

Imagine a person who works in a stressful job. Instead of responding with anger when a co-worker snaps at them, they pause and choose kindness. Why? Because their love for God shapes how they treat people. Their heart tells them to forgive, their soul reminds them of God’s mercy, and their mind recalls the words of Scripture. Loving God changes not only how we worship but also how we live every single day.

Bible Story Connection

The story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37) shows this love in action. A man was left beaten on the roadside. Religious leaders passed him by, but a Samaritan—a man from a group despised by the Jews—stopped, cared for his wounds, and paid for his lodging. The Samaritan’s compassion reflected love for God and neighbor. His heart, soul, and mind worked together in obedience to God’s greatest command.
