6Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:”Philippians 2:6–9 (KJV)

Remembering that on June 19, 1865—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation—enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally told they were free. That day became known as Juneteenth, a celebration of liberty, dignity, and long-awaited justice.

But Juneteenth is more than just a historical moment. It echoes a spiritual truth: Freedom delayed is not freedom denied, and true deliverance requires a sacrifice. As we reflect on Juneteenth, we are reminded of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, who died like a slave so that all humanity—Black, white, brown—could be spiritually free.  Let’s talk about it.

Jesus Died Like a Slave

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was beaten, stripped, mocked, and nailed to a cross—a punishment reserved for criminals and slaves. The Roman method of crucifixion was designed to degrade, humiliate, and send a message of fear. Sound familiar? That is the same system of oppression and psychological warfare used during chattel slavery in America.

But Jesus chose this death.
“Who, being in the form of God… took upon him the form of a servant… and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”Philippians 2:6–8 (KJV)

The Greek word for “servant” is doulos, which means bondservant or slave. Jesus humbled Himself, taking on the suffering of the lowest class, to bring about a greater liberation—freedom from sin and death.

Just as Juneteenth marks the day when the truth of freedom finally reached the people, the Gospel is the good news that the Blood of Jesus Christ paid for our eternal emancipation.

The First Man and Woman: Born of the Soil of Africa?

The Bible places the origin of humanity in the region of Eden, a place that scholars widely believe included parts of Northeast Africa and the Middle East. Genesis 2:13 KJV mentions the land of Cush (ancient Ethiopia) and the rivers of the region, like the Gihon and Euphrates.

Adam and Eve, the first man and woman, were formed from the dust of this region. And according to genetic and anthropological studies, the oldest human remains ever found were in Africa. The scientific term mitochondrial Eve refers to the most recent common matrilineal ancestor of all humans—and she is traced back to East Africa.

Adam and Eve were placed in Eden, near the lands of Cush (Ethiopia) and the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers—modern Northeast Africa and the Middle East. This cradle of civilization birthed the earliest humans, and even secular science supports that all human life traces back to Africa.

Jesus Was a Man of Color and a Jew

Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, raised in Nazareth, and often walked the lands of Galilee, Samaria, and Jerusalem—regions historically and geographically located in the Middle East and Northeast Africa.

He was a Jew, born into the tribe of Judah, and His lineage traces back through King David all the way to Abraham.

David, the ancestor of Jesus, was from Bethlehem of Judah, but his descendants—including Joseph and Mary—settled in Galilee (Luke 2:4 KJV). David is described in 1 Samuel 16:12 KJV as “ruddy”—which means a reddish or glowing complexion, common among Middle Eastern shepherds who spent time in the sun, not implying whiteness.

Summary: What Did First-Century Galilean Jews Look Like?

  • Ethnically Semitic

  • Brown skin, dark hair, dark eyes

  • Culturally Jewish, linguistically Aramaic-speaking

  • Not white Europeans—but Middle Eastern/African rooted

This includes Joseph, Mary, Jesus, and even David in terms of ancestral lineage and appearance. Jesus was a man of color, born to humble Jewish parents, in a land rooted in both African and Semitic heritage.

This does not mean Jesus belonged to any modern racial category, but it reminds us that the Savior of the world did not come in power or privilege—He came through the lineage of a people who knew struggle, exile, and oppression.

According to the Rook of Revelation, John describes Jesus as having hair like wool and feet like fine brass, as if burned in a furnace—features often associated with people of color.  Revelation 1:14–15 KJV14His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; 15And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.

16And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength. 17And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: 18am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Spiritual Emancipation and Earthly Deliverance

Just as Juneteenth was delayed freedom, some people still haven’t heard or accepted the message of the cross. Jesus died, but many are still living as slaves to sin, fear, and systems of oppression.

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”John 8:32 (KJV)

Freedom requires hearing the truth, accepting it, and walking in it. The enslaved people in Texas were technically free in 1863—but they didn’t walk in that freedom until 1865. Likewise, Jesus died and rose again, but some hearts are still bound.

Juneteenth and Jesus: A Shared Message

  • Both involved sacrifice: Slaves bled in the fields. Jesus bled on the cross.

  • Both involved delayed justice: Emancipation was proclaimed long before it was experienced. Salvation was provided, yet many still reject or delay it.

  • Both offer hope: Juneteenth is a step toward human equality. Jesus offers eternal life and spiritual equality.

Reflection Question:  Are you free in name only, or are you walking in the freedom Jesus purchased for you?

Final Thought:
Juneteenth reminds us that freedom delayed still matters. The crucifixion reminds us that freedom was bought with blood. From the soil of Eden to the rugged cross, from the cotton fields to Galveston’s shores—true freedom comes from the truth. And truth has a name—Jesus Christ.

A CALL TO SALVATION:

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

John 3:5-6  5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7
