“Moreover, when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.”Matthew 6:16 (KJV)

“Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?”Isaiah 58:6(KJV)

The Power of Fasting: Breaking Chains and Strongholds

Fasting is more than just denying yourself food; it is a spiritual discipline that draws you closer to God. Throughout the Bible, fasting is linked to divine breakthroughs, deliverance, and deeper intimacy with the Lord. Jesus Himself fasted for 40 days in the wilderness before starting His ministry (Matthew 4:2 KJV).

Moses fasted before receiving the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:28). Even the city of Nineveh fasted in repentance and was spared from destruction (Jonah 3:5-10 KJV).

Many Christians around the world observe fasting during the 40 days of Lent, a time of reflection, prayer, and sacrifice. While not everyone fasts for the entire period, believers can deny themselves something—whether it’s food, entertainment, or social media—as a way to focus more on God. The Lord sees every sacrifice made in secret and rewards openly (Matthew 6:17-18).

Why Should We Fast?

To Break Spiritual Strongholds — Fasting removes the barriers that hinder prayers and spiritual growth. In Mark 9:29 KJV, Jesus said, “This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.” Some breakthroughs require a deeper level of faith and self-denial.

To Draw Closer to God — When we fast, we empty ourselves of distractions and create space for God to move in our lives. James 4:8 KJVsays, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”

To Humble Ourselves Before the Lord — Fasting is a sign of humility and dependence on God. King David fasted as an act of repentance, saying, “I humbled my soul with fasting” (Psalm 35:13 KJV).

To Seek Deliverance and Healing — Many in the Bible fasted for deliverance from oppression. Queen Esther called a three-day fast to save her people (Esther 4:16 KJV). When we fast, we invite God’s intervention in our lives.

God is Watching and Listening

Every sacrifice made in faith is seen by the Lord. He honors those who seek Him with sincerity and a pure heart.

Fasting is not just about giving up food; it is about surrendering ourselves completely to God’s will. He promises that when we fast according to His way, chains will be broken, the oppressed will be set free, and prayers will be answered (Isaiah 58:6-9 KJV).

As believers worldwide fast during Lent, you are not alone. The power of unity in prayer and fasting is undeniable (Matthew 18:20 KJV). Even if you cannot fast for the full 40 days, consider denying yourself something meaningful as an offering to the Lord. He is listening, and He is watching.
