Hello my sisters and brothers in Jesus Christ,

I wanted to talk with you about a subject close to my heart today—grief. My mother was buried on March 1st, 2024, She finished life at 84 years old and it has been the hardest year of my life. Today marks that one year anniversary, and by His grace, I made it through.  Yet through it all, I hold on to this truth: God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good.

I am sure many of you can relate. Especially if you have experience war, crime, disease, accidents, and natural deaths. But if you haven’t experienced deep grief, then today you will learn about one of life’s hardest trials. And more importantly, you will be equipped to comfort others with the Word of God. Many times, I went to funerals, offering condolences. I thought I understood grief.

But until you lose someone who was like the air you breathe—a parent, a child, a spouse, sibling, relative or a life long best friend—you don’t fully grasp the weight of sorrow that can silence your soul.

Let’s talk about it.

Grief is a strange companion. It never fully leaves, but in time, you become stronger and learn to live with it. I heard from an elder that suggests that children should have pets in order to learn about death. I had a pet once as a teen that died and I cried for about two days then I got over it.  This type of grief I am referring to is nothing like that.  Its much deeper.

What Grief Feels Like

Grief is more than sadness—it affects the mind and body in unexpected ways. Psychologists have studied grief, and the symptoms can be intense:

  • Feeling like time is standing still or moving in slow motion (APA, 2020).
  • Losing track of days or forgetting basic tasks (Mayo Clinic, 2021).
  • Hearing or seeing things that remind you of the lost loved one—their voice, their presence (Shear et al., 2013).
  • Feeling detached from reality, as if life is happening to someone else (Harvard Medical School, 2022).
  • Deep exhaustion, headaches, and body aches from emotional stress (American Psychological Association, 2020).

If you’ve experienced any of these, you are not alone.

Finding Your Quiet Room- Finding Peace in God’s Word –

During my darkest moments, God’s Word carried me. His promises were my anchor.

Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV) reminds us:
“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

Even in grief, God’s love never fails. He gives fresh mercy every day. Each sunrise is a sign that we are not alone.

Psalm 46:10 (KJV) spoke peace to my heart:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Grief makes us restless. Our minds replay memories, searching for answers. But in those moments, God calls us to be still—to rest in Him.

This is your Quiet Room- Resting in the Lord.

Isaiah 30:15 KJV  “For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.”

Let the Lord be your strength as rest in quietness and in confidence (faith)

One day, as I was struggling, I read Ecclesiastes 9:5-8 (KJV):
“For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun. Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepts thy works. Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.”

This passage humbled me. It reminded me that life is temporary, but God’s promises are eternal. Those who have passed are at peace. They no longer suffer, feel pain, or experience conflict. We who remain must live in faith, trusting in God’s plan.

Isaiah 26:3 (KJV) also gave me comfort:
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusts in thee.”

Even in deep sorrow, God offers perfect peace when we keep our minds focused on Him. As time goes by, you will experience the peace that you can share with others when they are grieving.  “This too shall pass”

Coping With Grief

Christian counselors and psychologists offer guidance on how to manage grief:

  • Acknowledge the pain. Do not push down feelings—express them through prayer, journaling, or talking to someone you trust (American Psychological Association, 2020).
  • Take care of yourself. Grief affects the body. Get enough sleep, eat well, and allow yourself to rest (Mayo Clinic, 2021).
  • Accept that grief comes in waves. Some days will be better than others. Let each moment come without guilt (Harvard Medical School, 2022).
  • Find your Quiet Room with God. Spend time in scripture, prayer, and worship. Let God’s presence be your refuge (Shear et al., 2013).
  • Talk to someone. Whether it’s a pastor, Christian counselor, or trusted friend, don’t grieve alone (APA, 2020).

Moving Forward With Faith

  • Find Your Quiet Room. Set aside time to sit with God. In prayer, worship, or silent reflection, let His presence comfort you.
  • Remember His Promises. Write down scriptures that remind you of His love and faithfulness. Keep them close when sadness comes.
  • Trust His Plan. Even in loss, God is still in control. He sees our pain and carries us through every storm.

If you are grieving, you are not alone. God is with you, and His love never fails. Hold on to Him, and He will bring peace to your heart.

A CALL TO SALVATION:

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

John 3:5-6  5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
