Ecclesiastes 2:24 (KJV) reminds us:
“There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labor. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.”
Jeremiah 9:23-24 (KJV) “Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understand and know me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.”
What is the true gift from the hand of God? It is to love and know God, love each other, eat, drink, and find joy in your labor. Everything else is vanity.
As the world’s saying goes, “The only certainties in life are birth, death, and taxes,” no matter who you are—rich or poor, man or woman, young or old, sick or healthy.

Life’s Fleeting Nature and God’s Gift of Joy
The book of Ecclesiastes, written by King Solomon, explores the vanity of human pursuits. He realized that wealth, wisdom, and pleasure—though valuable—are ultimately temporary. Everything under the sun is fleeting. However, Solomon concludes that the best way to live is to find joy in what God provides: work, food, drink, and family. These blessings should not be overshadowed by worry, greed, or comparisons to others.
Many people chase material success, believing it will bring happiness, yet even the wealthy experience depression and emptiness. Joy does not come from possessions but from a heart connected to God. Anxiety over money, status, and keeping up with others only leads to stress. Instead, we should embrace the simple, God-given pleasures of life while trusting in Him.
God’s true gift is not found in material things. It is found in the condition of your spirit in everyday living. When we focus too much on getting ahead or keeping up with others, we miss out on the simple blessings that God has already given us that gives the spirit joy.
Why Chasing the World Leaves You Empty
John 6:63 KJV “It is the spirit that quicken; the flesh profit nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”
King Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, had everything—riches, power, and wisdom—but he still declared, “All is vanity” (Ecclesiastes 1:2, KJV). He realized that apart from God, everything in life is meaningless.
Jesus also warned about chasing wealth without seeking God:
- Matthew 6:31-33 (KJV) – “Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

A Bible Story: The Rich Fool (Luke 12:16-21 KJV )
Jesus told a parable about a rich man who had a great harvest. Instead of sharing or being grateful, he built bigger barns to store his wealth, thinking he could relax and enjoy life. But that very night, God told him, “Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee” (Luke 12:20, KJV).
This story teaches us that wealth is temporary, but our relationship with God is eternal.
Real-World Example: Burnout and the Brain
A doctor once explained that our brains work like batteries. If we overload them with small distractions, stress, and anxiety, we drain our energy and struggle with bigger tasks. Many rich and successful people suffer from depression because they never rest, reflect, or connect with God.
Romans 12:2 (KJV) – “Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
How to Receive God’s Gift of Joy
- Trust in the Lord – Stop worrying about money and success. God will take care of you. (Philippians 4:19 KJV)
- Enjoy God’s Blessings – Appreciate your family, your meals, and the simple moments in life. (Psalm 37:4 KJV)
- Renew Your Mind – Focus on the Word of God and reject fear and anxiety. (Isaiah 26:3 KJV)
Final Thought
True joy comes from knowing God, not from chasing the world. Whether you are rich or poor, young or old, God’s hand provides everything you truly need.
Reflection Question: Are you chasing things that won’t last, or are you embracing the true gift from God?

A CALL TO SALVATION:
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Romans 10:9-10 9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
John 3:5-6 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7
