Human nature often gravitates toward the shocking and sensational. It’s no wonder that horror movies, crime stories, and reports of violent events dominate entertainment and news headlines. A famous writing adage, “If it doesn’t bleed, it doesn’t lead,” captures the cultural fascination with bloodshed and tragedy. But what does this obsession do to our hearts, minds, and spirits? More importantly, what does God’s Word teach about this?
The Bible warns against rushing to hear or see violence. Proverbs 1:11-15 (KJV) captures this perfectly in the context of sinners enticing others to join them in bloodshed. The passage reads:
“If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause… My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path.”
This passage reminds us that an appetite for blood, whether in real life or entertainment, dulls our spiritual discernment and draws us away from God.
Biblical Story: Cain and Abel
The first murder recorded in human history is found in Genesis 4:8-10 (KJV). Cain, consumed by jealousy, killed his brother Abel. When confronted by God, Cain responded callously: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” This tragic story reminds us of how unchecked emotions, combined with a hardened heart, can lead to bloodshed. Worse still, Cain’s refusal to repent deepened his separation from God.
Like Cain, modern society’s fascination with violence can desensitize us. Watching endless streams of violent content—whether fictional or real—can erode our sense of empathy and increase feelings of fear and aggression.
The Psychological Effects of Consuming Violence
Research confirms what the Bible has long taught: dwelling on violence impacts the mind. Philippians 4:8 (KJV) encourages believers to focus on things that are true, honest, pure, and lovely. Yet, filling our minds with horror, crime, and murder stories often produces the opposite—anxiety, desensitization, and moral confusion.
Three Scriptures to Consider
Proverbs 6:16-18 (KJV)
“These six things doth the Lord hate… hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief.”
The Lord detests those who are eager to engage in or celebrate violence. This extends to those who consume violent content for entertainment.
Psalm 11:5 (KJV)
“The Lord try the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hate.”
God’s Word clearly condemns a love for violence. While it is important to stay informed, we must guard our hearts against a fascination with destruction.
Matthew 5:9 (KJV)
“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”
Instead of rushing to consume violent content, believers are called to pursue peace and spread it in a world desperate for healing.
Action Steps for Believers
Guard Your Heart and Mind:
Limit your exposure to violent movies, crime dramas, and sensationalized news. Instead, focus on uplifting content that encourages peace and love.
Be a Peacemaker in Conversations:
Instead of fueling conversations about violence, steer discussions toward healing, forgiveness, and redemption.
Feed on God’s Word:
Meditate on scriptures like Philippians 4:8 to renew your mind and focus on what pleases God.
Reflection Question
What steps can you take today to replace violent entertainment with content that honors God and brings peace to your mind?
By avoiding the rush to hear or see blood, we free our hearts to reflect God’s peace and goodness. Let us remember that the true source of lasting joy and fulfillment comes not from the horrors of this world, but from the love and truth of Christ.

CALL TO SALVATION:
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Romans 10:9-10 9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in your heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
John 3:5-6 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
