Letter from the Editor: Thanksgiving Gratitude-Even in the Midst of Loss
Hello Daily Scripture Explained Tribe,
As Thanksgiving approaches, our hearts naturally turn toward gratitude. Yet, let us remember who is truly worthy of our thanks—Jesus Christ, our Savior. Each day gives us countless reasons to be thankful, but this season offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the gifts God has given us.
For some, however, embracing gratitude during the holidays can feel challenging. I understand that loss can make celebrations difficult. This year, Thanksgiving feels different for me as well. My mother, who lived a full 84 years, passed away, and the holiday will never be the same without her.
At first, I wanted to avoid the traditional family dinner. The weight of her absence felt overwhelming, and I suggested we go to a restaurant instead. I even started researching places to eat, hoping to make Thanksgiving feel like just another day.
But my adult daughter said, “No. I want a family dinner at home.” She ordered groceries and planned to cook all my favorite dishes. It was then I realized how much I still had to be grateful for.
This morning, as I studied my Bible, God reminded me of a profound truth: we are not to mourn endlessly for those who have passed. They are no longer in this world but are with the Lord, celebrating in His presence. To be absent from the body is to be with the Lord. This is why we are called to love deeply those still with us, here in the land of the living.
Yes, we will miss our loved ones dearly, but God calls us to healing. Psalms 147:3 KJV “He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.”
Trust Him as our comforter. As 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 KJV reminds us: “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”
This Thanksgiving, consider extending fellowship to someone who may be alone or without family. Share a plate, offer a kind word, or invite them to your table. This act of love not only heals others but also allows us to experience God’s comfort through giving.
One very important gift similar to Thanksgiving is God has given us communion, The Last Supper is Jesus’ last dinner with his disciples before his crucifixion. He commanded them to drink wine and eat bread as his blood and flesh in remembrance of the completed work of the cross. As often as you drink and eat, do this in remembrance of me. Jesus does not want us to forget him and his teachings. He is a living God. We live by faith and not by sight.
Through communion, we remember that Jesus is in us, and we are in Him. It’s more than a ritual—it’s a celebration of the protection, strength, and freedom Jesus provides. The bread and cup remind us of His sacrifice, which saves us from spiritual prisons, even grief.
Another incomparable gift is salvation. Through Jesus, we receive eternal life and discover a life filled with purpose and joy. True happiness isn’t found in money or status but in simple blessings: the bread we eat, the drink we share, the relationships we cherish, and the work of our hands.
The writer of Ecclesiastes beautifully expresses this:
“I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labor, it is the gift of God” (Ecclesiastes 3:12–13 KJV).
Have you considered the joy that comes from meaningful work, whether it’s missionary service, volunteering, social work, professional or a small business? God takes delight when we glorify Him through our efforts.
As 1 Corinthians 10:31 KJV reminds us: “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”
This Thanksgiving, let us not only praise God but also celebrate communion, acknowledging the gifts of salvation, comfort, and the wisdom to find joy in life’s ordinary moments. Gratitude transforms the mundane into worship, reminding us that every good and perfect gift comes from above.
How can you glorify God this Thanksgiving through the simple blessings of food—even if it’s as humble as a sandwich, relationships, and the work of your hands?
Happy Thanksgiving.

CALL TO SALVATION

Romans 10:9-10 9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation
John 3:5-6 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
