Have you ever noticed how quickly you forget things you only hear once? But when you write it down, it seems to stick in your mind. That’s not an accident! Science shows that writing by hand strengthens memory, focuses the mind, and helps us learn better. When you write out God’s Word and connect it with your own life story, you are not only training your brain—you are also training your spirit.

Even in the Bible, God used writing to speak powerfully. He gave Moses the Ten Commandments on stone tablets. He wrote a warning on the wall for King Belshazzar. Jesus Himself bent down and wrote in the dirt before forgiving the woman caught in sin. Writing is a tool that God honors—and one we can use to grow closer to Him every day.

Writing is more than just putting pen to paper — it activates our mind in deeper ways. Here are a couple of scholarly insights you can share with others when motivating journal-writing:

  • A study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that handwriting (versus typing) leads to more elaborate connectivity across brain networks in regions tied to memory formation and encoding of new information. Frontiers

  • In Scientific American, Charlotte Hu notes: “Engaging the fine motor system to produce letters by hand has positive effects on learning and memory.” Scientific American

  • Another Japanese study observed that writing on physical paper raised brain activity connected with remembering content one hour later, likely because of the rich spatial, tactile, and visual features of writing. The University of Tokyo

The takeaway? When someone writes a Scripture verse, then records a personal experience, and finally reflects on what God taught them, they are engaging on multiple levels — visual, motor, emotional, and semantic — helping imprint the lesson deeper into memory.

Three biblical stories

1. Jesus writes in the dust when confronted about stoning

In John 8:1–11, the scribes and Pharisees bring a woman caught in adultery before Jesus and ask whether she should be stoned (as the law demanded). Jesus stoops and begins writing in the dirt with His finger. Then He says, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” (John 8:7). He writes again, and the accusers depart one by one. GotQuestions.org+2Classic Theology+2

Though the text never records what He wrote, many scholars believe the act itself was purposeful — it gave time for conviction, humility, and self-reflection. Classic Theology+1

2. The handwriting on the wall (Belshazzar’s feast)

In Daniel 5, King Belshazzar holds a drunken feast using sacred temple vessels. Suddenly, “the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall.” (Daniel 5:5) Bible Gateway+2Bible Gateway+2

No one in the court could interpret the writing, so Daniel is brought in. He reads “MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN,” meaning God has numbered the king’s days, weighed him and found him deficient, and will divide his kingdom. That very night, Belshazzar is slain. (Daniel 5:25–30) Bible Gateway+3My Jewish Learning+3Enduring Word+3

This dramatic moment illustrates that God’s writing carries authority — even kings tremble before it.

3. Tablets written by the finger of God

In Exodus, when Moses is on Mount Sinai, God commands him, “Write these words; in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” (Exodus 34:27) Then, Moses writes on the stone tablets what God has given him. United Church of God+3Bible Docs+3The Torah+3

Earlier, the first tablets (inscribed by God’s finger) are smashed in anger over Israel’s idolatry, but later God commands a second set to be inscribed again. The Torah+2Amazing Facts+2

These tablets represent the covenant between God and His people, with writing serving as a tangible, enduring testimony to His law and promises.

How you might invite others to journal in faith

Here’s a gentle script or prompt you could put before your group:

“Imagine writing a verse from Scripture — not just reading it, but inscribing it yourself. Then, reflect: What in my life echoes this truth? When has God shown me something similar? What is He asking me to change or trust more deeply?

By writing, we slow our thoughts, give voice to God’s word, and allow our personal story to intersect with His. The physical act of writing helps anchor memory and spiritual transformation.”

Action Plan: How to Start a Scripture Journal

  1. Choose Your Notebook

    • Pick a simple journal or notebook. Keep it just for Scripture and reflections.

  2. Write the Word – start with a request asking the Holy Spirit in Jesus name to guide you and teach you. Repent sins.

    • Each day, copy one verse from the Bible. Writing by hand slows your mind and helps you remember.

  3. Connect to Life

    • Think of one personal story, answered prayer, or experience that relates to that verse. Write it briefly under the scripture.

  4. Reflect and Learn

    • Answer this: What is God teaching me through this scripture and my story?

  5. End with Prayer

    • Write a short prayer asking God to help you live out what you learned.

  6. Repeat Daily or Weekly – overtime you will see amazing transformation in your  spirit and renewing of your mind.

    • Set a time—morning coffee, lunch break, or bedtime. Over time, your notebook will become a powerful testimony of God’s faithfulness.

Reflection Question

“What is one scripture that speaks to me today, and what personal story in my life does it remind me of?”

A CALL TO SALVATION:

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

John 3:5-6  5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7
