“Abstain from All Appearance of Evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:22, KJV)

Dear Truth Seekers and Friends in Christ,

Happy   International Friendship Day – July 30, Wednesday💛 What a perfect day to reflect on how we influence one another as friends, leaders, teachers, and believers in Jesus Christ. True friendship speaks truth in love, and today, I want to share something on my heart that may be hard to say but important to consider.  Let’s talk about it.

I’m old school. And one thing that truly troubles my spirit is what I see in the house of God. Church attire has become more like clubwear or loungewear. I’ve seen women dressed in tight, revealing clothes and men wearing shorts and sweatpants, looking like they’re headed to the gym, not to worship the Lord of Hosts. The church should not look like the world—it should look like the body of Christ: modest, holy, and set apart.

I remember when church leaders dressed with reverence. Even the Levites in the Old Testament had a standard of appearance because they served in God’s presence. Their dress reminded people of their authority.  And though the culture has changed, God has not. He still deserves our best. My father once told me, “Even the best clubs have dress codes because people act better when they dress better.” That stuck with me. When you respect where you are, your behavior follows.

This isn’t about judging someone who walks in for the first time. We welcome everyone. But as people grow in faith, the Holy Spirit begins to transform not only their heart but their choices—including how they dress for worship. Come as you are, yes—but don’t stay that way. Grow.

Today, even business casual in government buildings has vanished. And sadly, the church is beginning to reflect the chaos of the world rather than its refuge. If we, as believers, start to blend in with darkness, how will anyone see the light?

Let’s remember:

• “Abstain from all appearance of evil” – 1 Thessalonians 5:22

• “Let us walk honestly, as in the day…” – Romans 13:13 KJV

• “My little children, sin not… but if you do, Jesus is your Advocate” – 1 John 2 KJV  

Church, our young people are watching. If we don’t show them what holy looks like, the world will show them what evil looks like. Let our clothing not distract from the Spirit. Let it reflect Him.

Be encouraged today. Be a friend who lovingly sets a standard. Swap clothes. Visit the thrift store. Clean and sew what you have. And above all, dress your heart first—because from the inside out, God is still making all things new.

Psalms 96:9 – O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.
