Friends can make your life sweet, but the wrong friends can turn it bitter. Choosing the right people to walk with is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. The Bible gives us wisdom on how to select friends, how to keep them, and when it’s time to let them go. As a counselor, I often remind young people: Be careful what you do and who you do it with. Your future can rise or fall on the company you keep.

Jonathan and David: A True Friendship

One of the clearest pictures of friendship in the Bible is Jonathan and David (1 Samuel 18). Jonathan was the son of King Saul, yet he loved David like a brother. The Bible says their souls were “knit together.” Jonathan gave David his robe and even his sword as a sign of loyalty.

This was not just about gifts—it was about sacrifice. Jonathan knew David was chosen by God, and instead of being jealous, he protected him, encouraged him, and stood by him even when his father wanted David dead. Jonathan supported David at his lowest point, reminding him of God’s promises. That is what true friends do: they cheer you on when others attack, and they pray for you when you’re weary.

Jesus: The Greatest Friend

While human friends may fail, Jesus never does. In John 15:15 (KJV), Jesus said: “Henceforth I call you not servants… but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.” Think about that—Jesus, the Son of God, calls us friend.

But even Jesus experienced betrayal. In Luke 22:47–48 (KJV), we read: “And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?” Judas was one of His disciples, someone who walked with Him, learned from Him, and shared meals with Him. Yet in the end, Judas turned on Him.

This teaches us that anyone—even someone close—can betray us. But it also shows us how to respond: with truth and grace. Jesus did not lash out; He faced betrayal with calm strength because His trust was in the Father, not in man.

A true friend will stand with you, but even if they fail, remember that Jesus is the Friend who never leaves or forsakes you. He is the One who gives grace when others turn away, and truth when others deceive. And He proved His loyalty by giving His life for us.

The Value of True Friends

True friends support you in both truth and grace. They tell you when you are wrong, but they also help you back up when you stumble. Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 (KJV) reminds us: “  9 Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.  10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

But beware: not everyone who smiles at you is truly for you. Proverbs 16:28 warns that “a whisperer separateth chief friends.” Gossip, envy, and dishonesty can destroy a bond quickly. Be alert to how people act when you’re in trouble—your enemies often get busy when you are weak. A loyal friend will stand with you, not against you.

How to Build and Keep Friendships

  • Agree on values: Amos 3:3 says, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” If your values clash, the friendship will not last.

  • Choose peace: Avoid angry, negative people who drag you into drama (Proverbs 22:24–25).

  • Love and forgive: Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loveth at all times.” Forgive mistakes, and be patient with each other.

  • Sharpen one another: Proverbs 27:17 teaches, “Iron sharpeneth iron.” Encourage, correct, and inspire each other toward growth.

When to Let Go

If a friend constantly pulls you into sin, mocks your faith, or makes you compromise your values, it may be time to let go. 1 Corinthians 15:33 (KJV) says, “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” You can love them, pray for them, and show kindness—but don’t let their choices sink your future.

Reflection Question

Who are the friends in my life that sharpen me and help me grow in God’s truth and grace—and who are the ones I need to release into God’s hands?
