John 6:63 KJV It is the spirit that quickens; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

This teaching is a call for self-examination. Are we speaking words of faith, life, and truth, or are we murmuring, complaining, and rejecting the hard sayings of Jesus?

Doth this offend you?

Jesus taught that His words are spirit and life, yet many of His followers found His teachings difficult to accept. In John 6:63 (KJV), He explains, “It is the spirit that quickens; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”

Many disciples murmured against Him, and some even walked away (John 6:66). They were offended because they relied on their fleshly understanding instead of spiritual wisdom. The truth of God’s Word often challenges human logic and emotions, but Jesus makes it clear that spiritual life comes from believing and abiding in His Word.

Scripture

John 6:58-66 King James Version

58This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eat of this bread shall live for ever. 59These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum. 60Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

61When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you? 62What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? 63It is the spirit that quickened; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

64But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.  65And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. 66From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

Be careful concerning the words you speak about God or others. Do not be a plant that needs to be uprooted.

Jesus warns us in Matthew 12:37 (KJV): “For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” The Pharisees were offended when Jesus spoke the truth, just as some disciples were in John 6.

He explained that what comes out of our mouths reflects the condition of our hearts (Matthew 15:11 KJV). Words can either bring life or condemnation, and those who reject the truth will eventually be rooted up like plants that God has not planted (Matthew 15:13  KJV).

Scripture:

Matthew 15:11 KJV  Not that which goes into the mouth defiles a man; but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.

Matthew 12:37  KJV  “For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

8This people draw  nigh unto me with their mouth, and honor  me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 10And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:

11Not that which goes into the mouth defiles a man; but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man. 12Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Know  thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?

13But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father has not planted, shall be rooted up. 14Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

Reflection Question:

Are my words bringing life and aligning with the truth of Jesus, or am I speaking or writing or commenting on social media from the flesh, rejecting His Word?

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
