The Tenth Commandment: “Thou Shalt Not Covet” (Exodus 20:17 KJV).
Many people believe coveting is harmless because it happens inside the mind. But as a counselor, I see how comparison quietly steals joy, peace, and gratitude. The Tenth Commandment speaks to the heart, where many struggles begin.
The Tenth Commandment requires us to be fully content with our own condition and to have a right attitude toward our neighbor and what belongs to them. In simple words, God calls us to guard our thoughts and desires.
What the Tenth Commandment Means
The Bible says, “Thou shalt not covet” (Exodus 20:17 KJV).
Coveting means:
Wanting what God has given someone else
Comparing your life to others
Feeling resentment instead of gratitude
Letting desire turn into bitterness
Coveting starts in the heart, but it does not stay there. It affects words, actions, and relationships.

Why This Commandment Matters Today
Today, comparison is everywhere—social media, advertising, and constant images of “better” lives. Psychology shows that constant comparison increases anxiety, depression, and dissatisfaction.
People who covet often feel:
Never satisfied
Always behind
Angry without knowing why
God’s command protects the heart from endless wanting.
A Bible Story: Ahab Covets Naboth’s Vineyard
In 1 Kings 21, King Ahab wanted Naboth’s vineyard. When he could not have it, he became angry and depressed. His coveting led to lies, injustice, and murder.
What started as desire ended in destruction. This story shows that coveting is never small—it grows if not checked.
What Obeying the Tenth Commandment Looks Like
Obedience includes:
Practicing gratitude daily
Trusting God’s timing
Rejoicing in others’ blessings
Being content with God’s provision
Contentment frees the heart from envy.
How This Commandment Heals the Mind
As a counselor, I see emotional healing when people stop measuring life by others. Contentment brings peace, clarity, and joy.
God’s command teaches that what He gives is enough.
Grace When We Struggle With Comparison
Everyone struggles with envy at times. God offers forgiveness and help through repentance and renewed thinking. Contentment grows with practice and prayer.
