The Sixth Commandment: “Thou Shalt Not Kill”

The Sixth Commandment: “Thou Shalt Not Kill”  Exdous 20:13 KJV

Many people believe the Sixth Commandment only applies to murder. But as a counselor, I see how harm can happen long before physical violence. Words, anger, hatred, and neglect can slowly destroy lives. God’s command protects life in all its forms.

The Sixth Commandment requires us to preserve our own life and the life of others, and forbids anything that harms life unjustly. God values life deeply because He is the giver of life.

What the Sixth Commandment Means

The Bible says, “Thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 20:13 KJV).

This commandment includes:

Not harming others physically

Not allowing hatred to grow in the heart

Caring for emotional and spiritual well-being

Protecting the innocent

Jesus taught that anger and hatred in the heart are also dangerous. Life is harmed not only by actions, but by attitudes.

Why This Commandment Matters Today

People today live with high stress, anger, and resentment. Psychology shows that untreated anger often turns inward as depression or outward as aggression.

God’s command invites people to choose peace over rage and care over cruelty. Protecting life includes protecting mental and emotional health.

A Bible Story: Cain and Abel

In Genesis 4 KJV, Cain became angry and jealous when God accepted Abel’s offering. Instead of addressing his heart, Cain let anger grow. This anger led to the first murder.

God warned Cain before the act, but Cain ignored the warning. This story shows how unchecked anger can destroy life and relationships.

A Real-Life Counseling Story

I once counseled a man who lived with constant anger. He never hurt anyone physically, but his words were harsh and cutting. His family felt afraid and distant.

As he learned to manage anger through prayer and accountability, his relationships changed. Preserving life included learning to control speech and emotions.

What Obeying the Sixth Commandment Looks Like

Obedience includes:

Seeking peace instead of revenge

Caring for physical and mental health

Protecting the vulnerable

Managing anger with wisdom

Preserving life also includes caring for your own well-being. God does not ask people to ignore their pain.

How This Commandment Brings Healing

As a counselor, I see healing when people learn to forgive and let go of hatred. Protecting life includes protecting the heart.

This commandment teaches that every life has value, including your own.

Grace for Those Who Have Failed

Many people carry guilt for harm done through words or actions. God offers forgiveness through repentance and change. Life can be restored.

Reflection Question

Are there ways—through anger, words, or neglect—you may be harming life instead of protecting it?
