Bible Story
The Pharisee bragged about his good deeds while the tax collector prayed, “God be merciful to me, a sinner.” Jesus said the humble man went home justified.
In Luke 18:9–14 KJV, Jesus tells a powerful story that shows exactly why pride blocks your blessing, but humility opens the door to God’s favor.
Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee—highly respected, religious, and confident in his own goodness. The other was a tax collector, a man disliked by society and known as a sinner.
The Pharisee stood tall and bragged before God. He listed all his good deeds and compared himself to others. He prayed, “God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are” (Luke 18:11 KJV). His words were full of pride. He wasn’t really praying—he was performing. Pride made him blind to his own need for mercy.
Meanwhile, the tax collector stood afar off. He didn’t even lift his eyes toward heaven. He beat his chest in sorrow and prayed one simple, honest cry:
“God be merciful to me a sinner.” (Luke 18:13 KJV)
Jesus said this man went home “justified”—forgiven, accepted, and covered by God’s grace (Luke 18:14 KJV).
Why?
Because God responds to humility, not self-praise. The Bible clearly says,
“God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” (James 4:6 KJV)
Pride blocks blessings because it shuts the heart to correction, repentance, and dependence on God. Pride focuses on self, not the Savior. Pride keeps us climbing a ladder God never asked us to climb.
But humility—true humility—opens heaven’s door. It invites God’s mercy, His guidance, and His peace.
Jesus ended the story with this eternal truth:
“Every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” (Luke 18:14 KJV)
God lifts the lowly.
He pours grace on the honest.
And He blesses the one who knows they need Him.
Real-World Example
Tom built his career from the ground up, but pride made him ignore advice and burn bridges. After losing his job, he surrendered to God and started again with humility. Soon, doors opened—better job, stronger faith, peaceful heart.

A CALL TO SALVATION:
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Romans 10:9-109That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
John 3:5-65Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7
