Gratitude Changes the Brain and Lack of Praise Leads to Emotional Darkness

Psalms 150:6 KJV  “Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.”

Modern psychology confirms what Scripture has taught all along.

Studies show that gratitude practices can reduce symptoms of depression by up to 25%. Gratitude activates parts of the brain linked to hope, calm, and emotional regulation.

Praise works the same way—but deeper.
Praise connects gratitude to God, not just circumstances.

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

Bible Story Summary: Paul and Silas Praising in Prison (Acts 16:16–34, KJV)

Paul and Silas were arrested for preaching about Jesus and helping a young woman who was in spiritual bondage. They were beaten, placed in chains, and locked in the inner prison.

Instead of complaining or losing hope, Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises to God at midnight. Other prisoners heard them praising.

Suddenly, God sent a great earthquake. The prison doors opened, and everyone’s chains fell off. No one escaped. The jailer, seeing the doors open, feared for his life, but Paul stopped him and told him not to harm himself.

Paul and Silas then shared the Gospel with the jailer and his family. That same night, the jailer and his household believed in Jesus and were baptized. What began as suffering ended in salvation.

The next day the magistrate judge heard the story and let Paul and Silas go. Everything worked in their favor. 

 

Reflection Question

When things go wrong, do I praise—or do I complain first? 

Action Step (Simple but Powerful)

Today, thank God out loud.

Not silently.
Not later.
Out loud.

Say:

• “Thank You, Lord, for keeping me.”

• “Thank You, Lord, for helping me.”

• “Thank You, Lord, even when I don’t understand.”

Praise opens doors the mind cannot.

God still inhabits praise.
