Main Scripture: “And why behold thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but consider not the beam that is in thine own eye?” (Matthew 7:3 KJV)
In today’s world, judging others self righteously has become commonplace. We judge the church, family, friends, and especially people in entertainment and social media. While pointing out sin or wrong doing may seem justified, we must pause and ask: Does this glorify God? Does it serve His Kingdom or simply satisfy curiosity?
Jesus teaches us to focus on our own flaws before judging others. He also tells us that what is in the dark will come to the light. Therefore, how do we distinguish between the truth exposed by God or just dirty gossip? This study will explore what it means to judge righteously, avoid gossip, and glorify God in truth.
Understanding Judging and Gossip
When we point fingers at others, even when speaking the truth, we must consider our motives. Are we exposing truth to protect others and glorify God, or are we gossiping for entertainment? Gossip, even if factual, can harm reputations and bear no fruit for God’s Kingdom.
The entertainment industry often reveals shocking truths, such as satanic rituals and ungodly behavior. While it’s important to understand these dangers, we must not idolize celebrities or give them our devotion. Instead, our focus should be on serving God and pointing others to Him. We should always based our thought and opinions on the word of God and his truths.
Biblical Story: Noah’s Drunkenness (Genesis 9:20-27 KJV)
After the flood, Noah became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent. One of his sons, Ham, saw his father’s shame and told his brothers. Rather than gossiping, Shem and Japheth covered Noah respectfully. This story teaches us that even when the truth is evident, our response should reflect God’s love, honor, and respect—especially toward those God has placed in authority.
Ham’s actions led to a curse, while Shem and Japheth were blessed for their discretion. This shows that exposing someone’s flaws carelessly, even if true, is not in line with God’s will.

Gossip vs. Righteous Exposure
- Gossip Channels:
- Content about who is divorcing, cheating, or fighting offers no spiritual benefit. These channels thrive on sensationalism and encourage sin by entertaining others’ failures.
- Scripture: “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying…” (Ephesians 4:29 KJV).
- Righteous Exposure:
- Channels or messages that expose sin for the purpose of warning believers, protecting the vulnerable, or glorifying God are different. These point to repentance and salvation.
- Scripture: “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.” (Ephesians 5:11 KJV).
Real-Life Application
Many people unknowingly sin by devoting attention to astrology, gossip channels, or celebrity scandals. This devotion often replaces time that could be spent glorifying God or growing in faith. Playing the lottery based on horoscopes, for example, turns trust away from God and toward worldly methods for gain.
Instead of entertaining sin, we are called to honor God with our words and actions. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3 KJV) reminds us that our focus should be on Him, not on celebrities, gossip, or wealth.
Reflection or Journal Questions
- Are the channels or content I consume glorifying God or satisfying curiosity?
- How can I focus on addressing my own flaws instead of pointing out others’?
- Do my words build others up, or do they spread negativity and gossip?
Action Steps
- Examine Your Motives: Before sharing or consuming content, ask, “Does this glorify God or entertain sin?”
- Redirect Your Focus: Replace time spent on gossip or worldly pursuits with prayer, Bible study, or acts of service.
- Speak with Grace: Commit to using your words to build others up and point them to Christ.
Conclusion
As believers, we are called to judge righteously, not hypocritically. Pointing fingers at others while ignoring our own sins dishonors God. Likewise, consuming or sharing gossip—even if true—does not further God’s Kingdom. Let us instead focus on glorifying God, respecting one another, and growing in holiness.
By removing the beam in our own eye, we can see clearly to help others in love and truth. Let’s commit to using our time, words, and energy to honor God and protect His sheep.
