As we prepare for 2025, it’s a great time to take a spiritual tune-up. Friendships and family relationships are gifts from God, but sometimes they need careful review to ensure they align with His Word. A friend is a gift you give yourself – you choose them.
Cousins are bloodline relatives – you do not chose them. It is the spirit that makes you family with God and his kingdom for eternity. Jesus Christ is your friend. He gave his life for you. Will you chose him? See offer of salvation at end of this page.
This Bible study focuses on tuning up your connections so you can enter the new year with love, wisdom, and strength. Remember which ever (friend or cousin) believes and do the will of God is your friend and eternal family.
We are all family by faith in God because, through the covenant God made with Abraham, believers are united as spiritual descendants. In Genesis 12:3 KJV, God promised Abraham that through his seed, “all families of the earth be blessed.” This blessing is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who came from Abraham’s lineage to offer salvation to all who believe.
In Galatians 3:29 KJV, Paul explains, “And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” This means that faith in Jesus makes us part of God’s family, transcending biological ties. Through the covenant, believers inherit the spiritual blessings promised to Abraham, including righteousness, eternal life, and unity with one another.
Faith in God binds us together as one family, making us brothers and sisters in Christ, regardless of earthly differences. This spiritual bond reflects God’s promise to bless all nations through Abraham’s faith and obedience.
John 15:13 KJV “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Reviewing Old Friendships
Not all friendships are meant to last forever. Ask yourself, are your friends helping you grow closer to Christ? Proverbs 17:17 KJV reminds us, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” True friends stand by you during life’s highs and lows, encouraging your faith and walk with God.
If a friendship pulls you away from Christ or fills your heart with negativity, it may be time to let it go. Pray for guidance and trust that God will place the right people in your life. Seek relationships that uplift, inspire, and point you toward God’s will.
Welcoming New Relationships
Jesus teaches us to view others through His eyes. In Matthew 12:50 KJV, He says, “For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.” This means those who follow God are your spiritual family. Be open to new friends who share your faith and values. Remember, a neighbor near is better than a distant relative when you need support (Proverbs 27:10 KJV).
Family Relationships Through Christ
Family can be a source of joy, but it can also bring challenges. If you’ve had conflicts with relatives, pray for healing and reconciliation. However, if someone refuses to repent or brings harm to your life, Jesus advises treating them “as a tax collector” (Matthew 18:17 KJV). This doesn’t mean hate them but love from a distance and prioritize your peace in Christ.
Action Steps for a Spiritual Tune-Up
Evaluate Relationships: Reflect on your friendships and family ties. Are they helping or hindering your walk with Christ?
Pray for Discernment: Ask God to reveal His will for your relationships.
Focus on God First: Never put anyone above the Lord. Strengthen your relationship with Him to guide all others.
