Introduction
Throughout history, rulers have been called kings, emperors, or presidents. The Bible refers to them as the “kings of the earth.” But what does Scripture say about them? Are they good or bad? Should we obey them? Let’s dive into God’s Word to find out.

Who Are the Kings of the Earth?

In the Bible, “kings of the earth” refer to rulers of nations. This includes ancient kings like Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar, and King David—and even modern leaders, like presidents and prime ministers.

God allows these leaders to govern nations (Romans 13:1). Some lead with justice, while others bring oppression. Good or bad, God is still in control. God allow evil leaders to bring the people under his obedience. A little trouble will cause people to call on the Lord.

Christianity is the largest religion in the world. It is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.  Approximately 2.38 billion people practice some form of Christianity globally. This means that about one-third of the world’s total population is Christian.

Christianity has several denominations, but the largest is the Catholic Church. There are about 1.2 billion Catholics globally. Other large denominations include Protestantism and the Eastern Orthodox Church.  Source:  World Population Review. Retrieved from the internet on 2/15/2025.

Most notable Christian largest countries are the United States, Russia, Philippines, Ethiopia, and Nigeria with over 65% Christian population.

How Are We Supposed to Be Subject to Them?

The Bible teaches that we should respect authority because God establishes leadership (Romans 13:1-2). But this comes with limits:

Obey the law unless it goes against God’s commands (Acts 5:29).  “Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.”

Pray for leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2).  1I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior;

4Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Live peacefully under their rule (Titus 3:1 KJV).1Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

Example: Daniel obeyed Babylon’s king but refused to worship idols. He stayed faithful to God and was blessed (Daniel 6).

How Should Leaders Honor God?

God expects rulers to:

Rule with justice and righteousness (Proverbs 29:2 KJV). “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked bear rule, the people mourn.”

Defend the poor and needy (Psalm 72:12-14 KJV).  12For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper. 13He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy. 14He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.

Acknowledge God’s authority (Psalm 2:10-11 KJV). 10Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. 11Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

Good Kings: King David honored God and led Israel with justice (1 Samuel 13:14 KJV).  “But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.”

Bad Kings: King Ahab led Israel into idolatry and sin (1 Kings 16:30-33 KJV).   33“And Ahab made a grove; and Ahab did more to provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him.”

The Good and the Bad

Revelation 17:14  KJV  “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.”

Good Leaders: Protect their people, follow God’s wisdom, and promote peace.
Bad Leaders: Seek power, ignore God, and oppress the weak.

Psalm 2 KJV  warns that kings who reject God will face His judgment, but those who serve Him will be blessed.

Conclusion

Presidents, kings, and rulers have a purpose—to govern. Some honor God, and some don’t. But as believers, we trust God is in control. We obey leaders unless they go against God’s law. Above all, we pray for them and seek God’s Kingdom first (Matthew 6:33). Jesus Christ is King of Kings and Lords of Lords.

CALL TO SALVATION:

John 3:16  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in your heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

John 3:5-6  5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
