Struggling to believe while praying for your loved ones? This post explores Mark 9:24 and Psalm 30:5, showing how to intercede for adult children, spouses, friends, and the prodigal in your life—trusting God to handle what you cannot.
Mark 9:24 (KJV): “And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”
Psalm 30:5 (KJV): “For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”
The Bible Story
In Mark 9, a desperate father brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus’ disciples, but they could not heal him. When Jesus arrived, the man pleaded, “If thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.” Jesus answered, “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” The father cried out through his tears, “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” Jesus then rebuked the unclean spirit, and the boy was healed.
This shows us two truths:
Faith does not have to be perfect for God to act.
God responds to honest, humble prayers—even when doubt is present.

Intercessory Prayer for Loved Ones
Like this father, we often bring our burdens to the Lord for those we love—adult children straying from God, spouses in crisis, friends with hidden battles, or loved ones facing sickness. Intercessory prayer is standing in the gap. We give the problem to God, not trying to control or interfere, but trusting Him to work things out in His timing.
The parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15) illustrates this. The father did not chase after his son or manipulate circumstances. He waited in faith, praying and watching. When the son came to himself, he returned home, and the father received him with open arms. God can do the same for our loved ones.
A Modern-Day Example
A mother prayed for her adult daughter, who was battling addiction. At first, she tried to fix everything herself—calling, rescuing, and even paying fines. But the cycle continued. Finally, she released her daughter to God in prayer. Months later, the daughter called with a changed heart, asking to go to church. Today, she is sober and serves in ministry.
The mother realized that her breakthrough came not when she held on tightly, but when she let go and trusted God to do what she could not.
The Battle in the Spirit
We must also understand that spirits are territorial and often travel through family bloodlines. Even science shows that people can inherit personality traits, tempers, expressions, and abilities without ever being raised by their relatives. These inherited spirits claim rights through generations, but their power is broken by the blood of Jesus.
If someone has worshipped Satan, the enemy may try to claim their children too. That is why baptism is not just a ceremony—it is a symbolic act of deliverance, showing that we are set free from all evil. In Christ, we are transformed into His likeness through grace, truth, love, and the forgiveness of sins. This is what Jesus meant when He said He came to give us life more abundantly (John 10:10). Abundance is not only about physical things—it is freedom, peace, and victory in the spirit.
Closing Word
When you pray for others, believe that God is more than able to handle what you cannot. Give Him your tears, your doubts, and your faith. He will bring joy in the morning.
Reflection Question
Who in your life do you need to release into God’s hands today, trusting Him to finish the work that you cannot?
A Prayer to Release Loved Ones to God
Heavenly Father,
I come before You with a heavy heart for those I love. Lord, I believe, but help my unbelief. I release my children, my spouse, my family, and my friends into Your hands. I can’t carry what only You can heal. Break every chain, silence every voice of the enemy, and cover them with the blood of Jesus. Lord, bring them home to You in Your timing and Your way. I trust You, and I thank You that joy comes in the morning. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
