The Battle Between Flesh and Spirit
Many believers confess, “I keep falling into the same sin.” Whether it’s overeating, addiction to substances, pornography, or lust—temptation has a way of sneaking back in when we are weak. The Bible teaches that “ Matthew 26:41 KJV “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
The human spirit desires to please God, but the flesh craves comfort and indulgence. These two are always at war (Galatians 5:17 KJV). To overcome, we must feed the spirit more than the flesh.
(Galatians 5:17 KJV) “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”
Temptation thrives in secrecy and shame, but healing begins with truth and repentance. Jesus showed us how to resist temptation—not through willpower, but through the Word of God. In the wilderness, after forty days of fasting, He overcame the devil’s offers of pleasure, pride, and power by saying, “It is written.” Scripture is our sword against every lie that tells us, “Just this once won’t hurt.”
The Power of Private Fasting
Fasting is not about starving the body—it’s about strengthening the spirit. Jesus said, “But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; that thou appear not unto men to fast”
Matthew 6:17-18 KJV: 16Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 17But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; 18That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly
When we quietly deny ourselves, God strengthens us in secret. The same principle applies to breaking free from addiction. You don’t have to announce your struggle to everyone. Go into your prayer closet, fast privately, and let God transform your heart. Silence confuses the enemy because he cannot fight what he doesn’t see coming.
Bible Story: Jesus’ Temptation in the Wilderness (Matthew 4:1–11)
After fasting forty days, Jesus was hungry—physically weak but spiritually strong. Satan tempted Him with food, fame, and power. Yet Jesus didn’t argue or reason. He declared Scripture. Each time, He began with “It is written.” By doing so, He revealed the key to victory: feed your spirit before you feed your desires.
Real-World Example
A woman struggling with emotional eating learned to pause before giving in. Instead of reaching for comfort food, she began reading a Psalm, praying, and journaling for five minutes. Over time, her cravings lessened, and her peace grew stronger. Like any addiction, it wasn’t instant, but daily surrender brought freedom.
Three Scriptures for Strength
-
1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV): ““There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it..”
-
James 4:7 (KJV): “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
-
Romans 8:5 (KJV): “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.”
3 Steps to Overcome Temptation
-
Admit the Battle: Acknowledge that you can’t overcome temptation alone. Confess your weakness to God and ask Him for strength. (Step 1: Admit powerlessness and depend on a higher power.)
-
Surrender Daily: Begin each day with prayer and Scripture. Ask the Holy Spirit to renew your mind and redirect your thoughts before temptation comes. (Step 3: Turn your will and life over to God’s care.)
-
Walk in Accountability: Find one trustworthy believer or counselor to walk beside you. Healing happens when you’re honest, but don’t seek attention—seek transformation. (Step 12: Share recovery and help others.)
Reflection Question
What desire are you feeding more—your flesh or your spirit?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You weak but willing. Help me resist the spirit of indulgence and addiction. Strengthen my mind and purify my heart. Let me hunger and thirst for righteousness instead of sin. Teach me to fast quietly, pray faithfully, praise sincerely, and live by Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
