How to Love Difficult People as Jesus Commanded

Loving difficult people is one of the hardest things we face as Christians, but it’s something Jesus commands us to do. In Matthew 5:44 KJV, Jesus says, “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” Loving others, even when they’re difficult, reflects the love God shows us.

Why Does Jesus Command This?
We’ve all been difficult to love at some point, but God loves us anyway. Romans 5:8 KJV  says, “But God commanded his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Jesus wants us to extend this same grace to others, even when they hurt us.

When we love difficult people, it shows that our faith is active. It also helps us grow spiritually, teaching patience, humility, and kindness. Difficult relationships can be opportunities to practice the Gospel in real life.

Three Steps to Love Difficult People
Pray for Them: Jesus taught us to pray for those who hurt us. Ask God to soften their hearts and give you strength to love them.
Example: Pray something like, “Lord, I don’t know how to handle this person, but I trust You to guide me.”

Show Kindness Anyway: Even when someone is rude or hurtful, respond with kindness. Proverbs 25:21-22 KJV says, “If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink.” Kindness can open doors to healing.

Set Healthy Boundaries: Loving others doesn’t mean allowing them to hurt you repeatedly. Jesus set boundaries when needed (John 2:15 KJV). Love can include saying “no” or stepping back while still praying for their well-being.

Real-Life Example
Think about how Jesus loved Judas, even knowing Judas would betray Him. At the Last Supper, Jesus washed Judas’ feet (John 13:12 KJV). This act of love showed that Jesus cared for Judas, even though Judas’ heart was against Him.

Reflection Question:
Who in your life is difficult to love, and how can you begin showing them the love of Christ this week?

CALL TO SALVATION:

John 3:16  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in your heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

John 3:5-6  5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
