Proverbs 24:6 KJV  “For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

Introduction

A grudge is heavy. It steals your joy, clouds your mind, and hurts your body. When we hold on to anger, we feed stress, create division, and make a dark atmosphere around us. Worst of all, a hard heart makes it hard to hear the Holy Spirit. Jesus calls us to forgive so we can live abundantly and walk in peace.

What the Bible Says (KJV)

  1. Ephesians 4:31–32 — “Let all bitterness, and wrath… be put away from you… And be ye kind one to another… forgiving one another.”

  2. Hebrews 12:15 — “Lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.”

  3. Romans 12:19 — “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”

Also remember: Exodus 14:14 — “The LORD shall fight for you,” and Matthew 10:16 kjv— “be… wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” Jesus wants us safe and wise—not bitter.

Why Grudges Harm You

  • Body: Constant anger keeps the body tense and tired. Over time, that stress can make you feel sick and worn out.

  • Relationships: Bitterness spreads. It divides families, friends, and churches. One offended person can turn a room cold.

  • Spirit: A grudge turns up the volume on your pain and turns down the voice of the Holy Spirit. You miss God’s gentle leading.

  • Truth: Some people hold grudges for years over things that were never true. Rumors and lies can trap a heart that refuses to check the facts or forgive.

A True Story: Joseph Forgave (Genesis 37–50 kjv)

Joseph’s brothers were jealous. They threw him into a pit and sold him into slavery. In Egypt, Joseph was falsely accused and sent to prison. Yet God was with him. Joseph interpreted dreams and, in time, became a leader under Pharaoh. A famine hit the land, and Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt to buy food—standing before the very brother they had betrayed.

Joseph had every reason to hold a grudge. Instead, he tested them wisely (harmless as a dove, wise as a serpent). When he saw their changed hearts, Joseph wept, forgave them, and said, “You thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good” (Genesis 50:20). His forgiveness healed a broken family, saved a nation from hunger, and honored God. That is the power of letting go.

How to Let Go (Counselor’s Guide)

  1. Pause and Pray: Tell God respectfully how you feel. Ask Him to soften your heart.

  2. Write and Release: On paper, name the hurt, then write, “Lord, I release this to You.”

  3. Bless, Don’t Curse: Pray good over the person’s soul. If they are not an enemy of God.  This breaks bitterness. Otherwise, give it to God.

Romans 16:17kjv “Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.”

  4. Set Wise Boundaries: Forgiveness is not foolishness. Be “wise as serpents, and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16).

  5. Seek Help: Talk to a mature believer or counselor for support and accountability.  Safety in a multitude of counselors  Proverbs 11:14 KJV

  6. Trust God’s Justice: “Vengeance is mine,” says the Lord (Romans 12:19). Let Him fight for you (Exodus 14:14).

  7. Choose Abundant Life: Jesus came that we might have life “more abundantly” (John 10:10). Bitterness blocks it—obedience unlocks it.
