Deuteronomy 31:16  KJV “And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.”

Hebrews 13:5 KJV  “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

God told Moses that after he died, Israel would turn to other gods and break His covenant.
Plain meaning: God was warning, “My people will drift. They will chase idols. But I see it, and I will still lead them back when they turn to Me.”

What it means for us

People wander. We get busy, scared, or tempted. We look to quick fixes—money, fame, a relationship, or “likes” online—to feel safe. Those become modern idols. God is not surprised. He warns us so we choose better. He calls us back through His Word, His Spirit, and His people.

Bible story

The Judges Cycle (Judges 2): After Joshua died, Israel forgot the Lord. They served Baal. Trouble came. They cried to God. God raised judges to save them. Then they had peace—until they drifted again. This shows God’s heart: He corrects us, but when we repent, He delivers us. He is faithful even when we fail.

Real-life example

Maria lost her job and got sick. Bills piled up. She felt like God had left her. She stopped praying and scrolled late at night, comparing her life to others. One day she whispered, “Jesus, help me.” She opened the Psalms and read out loud. Peace came little by little. A church friend brought groceries. A new job opened. Her problems didn’t vanish in a day, but hope returned because she turned back to Jesus.

For today’s struggles

Anxiety, debt, family fights, loneliness, bad news online—these can make us think God has forsaken us. But Jesus says, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5, KJV). Come to Him: “Come unto me… and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28, KJV).

Action steps

Pray: “Lord, I’m coming back.”

Replace the idol: open your Bible first each day.

Reconnect: call a believer and ask for prayer.

Reflection question: What “idol” steals my trust—and what one step will I take today to turn my heart back to Jesus?
