Imagine a world where everyone thought before they spoke. Where we all took the time to consider the impact of our words on others. Where we were all more mindful of the feelings of others.
This world might seem like a utopia, but it’s not impossible. It all starts with each of us making a conscious effort to bite our tongues when we feel the urge to say something hurtful.
Here are three examples of times when you should have held your tongue:
- When you’re angry.
When we’re angry, we often say things that we don’t mean. We lash out at the people we love, and we hurt them with our words.
If you’re feeling angry, take a few deep breaths and calm down before you say anything. Once you’re calm, you can talk to the person you’re angry with in a more constructive way.
- When you’re jealous.
Jealousy is a powerful emotion, and it can lead us to say things that we regret. If you’re feeling jealous of someone, try to focus on their positive qualities.
Remember that everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. Just because someone has something that you don’t doesn’t mean that you’re not good enough.
- When you’re insecure.
When we’re feeling insecure, we often put others down to make ourselves feel better. But this only makes us feel worse in the long run.
If you’re feeling insecure, focus on your own strengths and accomplishments. Celebrate your successes, and don’t compare yourself to others.
Here are some tips for biting your tongue:
- Call on the spirit of God, Speak the name of Jesus.
- Take a few deep breaths. This will help you to calm down and think more clearly.
- Count to ten. This will give you time to cool down and reconsider what you’re about to say.
- Imagine the other person’s feelings. How would you feel if someone said that to you?
- Ask yourself if what you’re about to say is necessary or helpful. If it’s not, then it’s probably best to keep it to yourself.
- Walk away. If you’re feeling too overwhelmed, it’s okay to walk away from the situation.
Biting your tongue is not always easy, but it’s worth it. When we’re mindful of our words, we can build stronger relationships and create a more positive world. Speaking against God and the Holy Spirit should never enter your mind.
Matthew 12:31-37 KJV “Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.” 31Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. 33Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. 34O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
35A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 “For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”
Below are examples of regrettable times when the tongue should have been tamed.
Example 1:
You’re at a job interview, and you’re feeling really nervous. The interviewer asks you about your experience, and you start to ramble. You’re so focused on not messing up that you don’t even realize what you’re saying.
After the interview, you realize that you said something negative about your previous employer. You’re mortified, and you know that you’ve probably hurt your chances of getting the job.
If you had taken a few deep breaths before you spoke, you might have been able to avoid saying something negative. It’s always best to err on the side of caution and to avoid talking negatively about others, especially in a professional setting.
Example 2:
You’re at a party, and you’re talking to a friend about your ex. You’re still angry about the way they treated you, and you start to say some really mean things.
The next day, you wake up feeling guilty. You know that you shouldn’t have talked about your ex in that way. You also know that your friend might tell your ex what you said.
If you had bitten your tongue, you would have avoided hurting your friend’s feelings. You would have also avoided putting yourself in a position where your ex could find out what you said.
Example 3:
You’re at a family gathering, and you’re talking to your brother. He’s been struggling with his weight lately, and you start to make some jokes about his appearance.
Your brother is hurt by your jokes, and he leaves the gathering early. You feel bad about what you said, and you realize that you crossed the line.
If you had thought about your brother’s feelings before you spoke, you wouldn’t have made those jokes. It’s important to be mindful of what we say to our loved ones, especially when they’re going through a difficult time.
Biting your tongue is not always easy, but it’s worth it. When we’re mindful of our words, we can build stronger relationships and create a more positive world.

Romans 10:9-10 9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation
John 3:5-6 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
