The Bible warns us about a time when many will turn away from God. This is called The Great Falling Away. It means that people who once followed God will reject Him, choosing false teachings, sin, or worldly pleasures over the truth. This is dangerous because it leads to destruction. However, God calls His people to stay faithful, to trust in Him, and to seek wisdom.

Jeremiah’s Warning: Do Not Forsake the Lord

Jeremiah 2:7-14 (KJV) speaks about how God blessed His people, but they abandoned Him. They worshiped false gods and turned away from His truth. God says:

“Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.”Jeremiah 2:11 KJV

God sees His people rejecting Him and asks, “What iniquity have your fathers found in me?” (Jeremiah 2:5 KJV). He is heartbroken that they abandoned His living waters for broken cisterns that cannot hold water (Jeremiah 2:13 KJV). This means people are choosing lies and emptiness instead of God’s truth.

Reflection Question: What are some things today that people chase after instead of seeking God?

The Falling Away and the Man of Sin

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 (KJV) warns:

“Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition.”

This verse speaks about a great rebellion before Jesus returns. Many will follow the “man of sin,” who exalts himself as God. This deception will be powerful, and many will be led astray, believing false teachings.

Jesus warned us in Matthew 24:24 KJV  that false Christs and false prophets will arise, performing signs and wonders to deceive even the very elect. 2 Corinthians 11:14 KJV also tells us that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, meaning evil can look good on the surface.

Reflection Question: How can we guard our hearts against false teachings?

Destroyed for Lack of Knowledge

Hosea 4:6 (KJV) states:

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.”

Many people turn away from God because they do not study His Word. They follow feelings, traditions, or social trends instead of biblical truth. This leads to destruction.

Action Step: Make it a habit to read the Bible daily and ask God for understanding.

The Righteous Will Stand Firm

Psalm 91:7 (KJV) says:

“A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.”

Even when many turn away from God, He promises to protect those who remain faithful. We must trust in the Lord and stand strong in our faith.

Reflection Question: How can you strengthen your faith to avoid being part of the great falling away?

Conclusion: Stay Close to God

The Great Falling Away is a warning for all believers. We must be careful not to drift away from God by ignoring His Word or following false teachings. Instead, we must seek wisdom, pray, and stay close to Jesus.

Final Action Steps:

  1. Stay in the Word – Read the Bible daily and ask God for wisdom (James 1:5 KJV).
  2. Pray for Discernment – Ask God to help you recognize false teachings.
  3. Stay Connected to Believers – Fellowship with true Christians to stay encouraged.

God is calling us to be faithful. Will you stand firm or fall away?

Matthew 22: 35-40 KJV   35Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.  38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

John 3:5-6  5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
