Words have weight, especially when we speak on behalf of God. Whether in teaching, preaching, or casual conversation, our words should reflect biblical truth, not personal opinion or cultural sayings. Misinformation can cause confusion and even turn people away from faith.

2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV) – “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

God calls us to be accurate and faithful in handling His Word. A simple mistake, such as misquoting scripture or mixing it with secular sayings, can mislead others. Worse, those seeking truth may lose trust in the authority of the Bible.

1. Speak with a Spirit of Excellence

God expects His people to uphold His Word with care. Misrepresenting the Bible, whether by mistake or on purpose, is dangerous.

I once served as a juror and was appalled when an attorney in closing argument used a Bible story to support his argument. The first half was accurate, but the second half was fabricated to fit his case. This was no innocent mistake—it was a deliberate distortion of Scripture for personal gain and to deceive the jurors.

Daniel 6:3 (KJV) – “Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him.”

Daniel’s faithfulness made him stand out. As believers, we should strive for the same level of excellence when sharing God’s Word.

Reflection: Have I ever altered or misused Scripture to fit my own understanding?

2. Avoid Misinformation and Cultural Myths

Many people quote phrases they believe are in the Bible, yet they are nowhere in Scripture. Sayings like “God helps those who help themselves” or “Cleanliness is next to godliness”  has a biblical foundation but is not scripture. When stating a quote that is not scripture let the person know that.

1 Peter 2:9 (KJV) – “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

Being set apart means being diligent in truth. My grandmother called this kind of careless misquoting “jailhouse preaching”—using scripture out of context to support personal views. I have heard people confidently quote a verse from the Gospel of John that was actually from Genesis. Mistakes happen, but we must not let error become habit.

Proverbs 30:6 (KJV) – “Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.”

Reflection: How can I ensure I am quoting Scripture correctly?

3. Guard Your Speech and Your Witness

How we speak God’s Word matters as much as what we say. Speaking with anger, cursing, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs can damage our testimony.

I once witnessed a man on a subway quoting Scripture while visibly intoxicated, gripping a pole to steady himself as he preached to the passengers. A woman next to me whispered, “Speaking God’s words with the devil’s tongue.” That moment stuck with me. He may have had good intentions, but the way he presented God’s Word overshadowed the message.

Matthew 5:16 (KJV) – “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

People observe not just what we say but how we live. If we claim to represent God, our conduct must align with His holiness.

Reflection: Does my speech and behavior reflect the holiness of God?

Final Thought: Be a Faithful Messenger

Misquoting Scripture or speaking carelessly about God’s Word does more harm than good. People trust what they hear, and if they later find out they were misled, it could shake their faith. Worse, the enemy uses such mistakes to discredit the Kingdom of God.

James 1:26 (KJV) – “If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridled not his tongue, but deceived his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.”

✅ Three Ways to Speak God’s Word with Excellence:

  • Study the Bible regularly – Know what it actually says, not just what you’ve heard.
  • Verify before quoting – Double-check sources to avoid spreading misinformation.
  • Live what you preach – Your lifestyle should match the words you speak.

Prayer for Speaking with Excellence

Heavenly Father,
Help me to be a faithful steward of Your Word. Guard my tongue so that I speak only truth. Let my words reflect Your holiness and not be mixed with error or carelessness. May I always speak with a spirit of excellence, shining Your light before others.  Give me wisdom to represent You well. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Reflection Question

💡 Am I using God’s Word to glorify Him, or am I speaking with the “devil’s tongue”—twisting Scripture or misrepresenting His truth?

Does my speech draw others closer to Christ, or does it cause confusion and doubt?

A CALL TO SALVATION:

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

John 3:5-6  5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
