Division often begins with labels. Name-calling escalates hostility. Judgment hardens hearts.
In Luke 18, the Pharisee judged the publican. Pride separated him more than sin separated the tax collector.
In Luke 18 (KJV), Jesus told a story about two men who went to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee. The other was a publican, or tax collector.
The Pharisee stood tall and spoke proudly. He thanked God that he was “not as other men are.” He listed his good works and compared himself to the sinner beside him. His prayer was full of pride.
The tax collector stood far away. He would not even lift his eyes to heaven. He beat his chest and said, “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13 KJV).
His prayer was simple and honest. He knew he needed grace. Jesus said that this humble man went home justified, not the proud Pharisee.
This lesson shows that pride can separate a person from God even more than open sin. Sin can be confessed and forgiven. Pride often refuses to admit wrong. Pride builds a wall around the heart. Humility opens the door for mercy.
Many people today make the same mistake. They compare themselves to others to feel better. They say, “At least I am not like them.” But God looks at the heart, not just outward behavior.
Proverbs 16:18 (KJV) reminds us, “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
The publican teaches us a better way. When we come to God with honesty and a soft heart, we receive help and peace.
James 4:6 (KJV) says, “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”
Counseling insight: Social identity theory explains how “us vs. them” thinking increases conflict. Humility reduces hostility.
Grace calls us to see people through redemption—not reputation.
Reconciliation requires humility first.

Romans 10:9-109That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
John 3:5-65Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7
