Gospel of Matthew 18:21–35 (KJV) — The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant.
✨ Forgive as You Were Forgiven: Grace Releases Bitterness
In Matthew 18, Peter asked Jesus how many times he should forgive someone. He thought seven times sounded generous. But Jesus answered, “Until seventy times seven.” In other words, forgiveness is not meant to be counted. It is meant to flow.
Jesus then told a story.
A king decided to settle accounts with his servants. One servant owed him ten thousand talents — a debt so large he could never repay it. The king had every right to punish him. But the servant begged for mercy. The king was moved with compassion and forgave the entire debt.
That same servant then found a fellow servant who owed him one hundred pence — a small amount compared to what he had been forgiven. Instead of showing mercy, he grabbed him and demanded payment. He would not wait. He would not forgive. He threw him into prison.
When the king heard what happened, he was angry. He said, “Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?” (Matthew 18:33 KJV). The unforgiving servant was then handed over to be punished.
Jesus told the parable of the unforgiving servant. Forgiven much—yet refused to forgive little.
Counseling research confirms unforgiveness increases stress and health problems. Forgiveness frees the heart.
Grace received must become grace extended.
Forgiveness does not excuse wrong. It releases control.
