Spiritual Tune-Up: Why Poverty Is More Than a Money Problem.  How Spiritual Poverty Creates Mental and Emotional Stress

Proverbs 10:22 KJV  — “The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.”  John 10:10 KJV The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

God increases what is wisely managed, not what is feared or wasted.  This same principle is seen in 2 Chronicles 1:6–12 (KJV) when Solomon became king. Solomon did not ask God for riches, long life, or power. Instead, he asked for wisdom and knowledge to lead God’s people rightly. Because Solomon valued wisdom over wealth, God added riches, honor, and abundance beyond any king before or after him. Scripture says there has not been one like him, nor shall there be again. Solomon’s wealth was the result of obedience, humility, and right priorities—not greed. This teaches that prosperity follows wisdom, and wisdom flows from reverence and obedience to God.

Spiritual Tune-Up: Why Poverty Is More Than a Money Problem

Poverty is often treated like a math problem, but Jesus taught it as a heart problem first. When the spirit is poor—full of fear, pride, guilt, or disobedience—the mind becomes stressed and confused. Then money decisions follow that same broken pattern.

God never said His people would prosper by chasing money. He said they would prosper by walking in spirit and truth, faith,  wisdom, obedience, repentance, and love.

God Equips Before He Expects

Jesus makes this clear in Matthew 25:14–30 (KJV), the Parable of the Talents. This is not just a story—it is a business lesson from heaven.

“For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.” (Matthew 25:14 KJV)

The master already owned the resources. The servants did not earn them—they were entrusted with them. One received five talents, another two, another one—“to every man according to his several ability.”

This matters. God does not give equally, but He gives fairly. Each person receives what they can manage.

The servants who invested and multiplied were praised:

“Well done, thou good and faithful servant… thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things.”

The servant who buried his talent did not lose it because of lack—he lost it because of fear.

“I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth.”

Fear creates poverty. Fear freezes action. Fear blocks growth. In business terms, this servant refused to save, invest, learn, or act. Jesus calls him wicked and slothful, not unlucky.

Therefore, God advises it is important to seek wise counsel before establishing plans.  God is the counselor but it is wise to have a mentor or seek learning in what ever it is you wish to do.    Proverbs, emphasizing that safety, stability, and established plan result from gathering wise, multiple counselors rather than relying solely on oneself.   “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14 KJV) and “Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established” (Proverbs 15:22 KJV).

Money Without Love Leads to Loss

God also warns against gaining wealth in unjust ways.

Proverbs 22:16 (KJV)
“He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.”

This means using people, ignoring the needy, or trying to buy favor from the powerful leads to loss. God watches how money is gained, not just how much is gained

.

Charity Is the Missing Link

This is where many people misunderstand prosperity. They think success is skill, knowledge, or hustle. God says success without charity (love) is empty.

1 Corinthians 13:1–7 (KJV)
“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.”
“And though I have the gift of prophecy… and have not charity, I am nothing.”
“And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor… and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.”

Charity is not just giving money. Charity is love guiding decisions. It is patient, kind, humble, honest, and disciplined. Charity keeps wealth from turning into pride, stress, and destruction.

Proverbs 13:22 KJV  states, “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children,” which is widely interpreted as a principle of stewardship, wisdom, and long-term planning rather than a strict mandate to leave money.

Insurance policies are to be left if nothing else as in the talents. You are to love your children and family and prepare for them.

The Truth About Prosperity

Psalms 32:8 KJV  “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”  Proverbs 16:9 KJV- A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

Proverbs 16:3 KJV – Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.  Everything is made possible by the Holy Spirit.  If it is too hard for you give it to God. He will help you.

From God’s view—and a wise financial view—prosperity flows in this order:

Love God and Love Each Other.

Baptism, Communion and Observe the Sabbath.

Worship in Spirit and Truth with Praise

Pray with Repentance (clean heart)

Obedience (right actions)

Wisdom (right decisions)

Charity (right motives in love)

Increase (lasting fruit)

Money follows the spirit. When the spirit is healed, the mind becomes clear. When the mind is clear, finances stabilize.  There, becareful because the LOVE of money is the root of all evil.  Money is for protection. God knows we need money. However, we are not to LOVE it and do anything for it.

1 Timothy 6:10  KJV  “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

Reflection Question:

1 John 4:7 KJV   7Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
Am I managing what God gave me with faith and love—or hiding it in fear?

A true spiritual tune-up doesn’t just fix your budget.  It fixes the root.

Romans 10:9-109That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

John 3:5-65Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7
