In Genesis 9:20–27, the Bible tells a short but serious story about honoring parents.

After the flood, Noah plants a vineyard and becomes drunk. He lies uncovered inside his tent. His son Ham sees his father’s nakedness and goes out to tell his brothers, Shem and Japheth. Ham does not protect his father’s dignity. Instead, he exposes his weakness.

Shem and Japheth respond very differently. They walk backward into the tent with a garment on their shoulders so they do not see their father’s nakedness. They cover Noah with respect and care.

When Noah wakes up and learns what happened, he realizes how Ham dishonored him. Noah then speaks blessings over Shem and Japheth, but a curse comes as a result of Ham’s disrespect.
