Bible Story
David was a shepherd long before he became king. He learned to fight lions and bears in the quiet fields when no one was watching. That same faithfulness prepared him to slay Goliath.
David’s life shows us that God sees what people miss—He sees everything, even the work we do in secret and the faithfulness no one else notices.
Before David ever fought Goliath or wore a crown, he was a young shepherd boy watching sheep in the quiet hills of Bethlehem. No crowds. No applause. No one cheering him on. Yet those hidden years were the place where God shaped his courage and faith.
When wild animals came to attack the flock, David didn’t run. He fought back. He later told King Saul,
“Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear.”
(1 Samuel 17:36 KJV)
No one was there to witness it—but God saw it all.
And because God saw David’s faithfulness in private, He trusted him with a public victory.
When Goliath mocked the armies of Israel, everyone else saw a giant too big to defeat. But David remembered how God helped him in secret moments others never knew about. He declared with bold faith,
“The LORD that delivered me… will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.”
(1 Samuel 17:37 KJV)
God honored that faith. With a simple sling and a stone, David brought the giant down (1 Samuel 17:49).
Years later, when Samuel came to anoint the next king, David’s own father didn’t bother to call him into the room. People saw only his older, stronger brothers. But God made this truth clear:
“For man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”
(1 Samuel 16:7 KJV)
David’s story teaches us this powerful lesson:
-
God sees your hidden battles.
-
God sees your quiet obedience.
-
God sees your efforts when others overlook them.
-
And God knows how to promote you at the right time.
Nothing done for Him is wasted. What God sees in secret, He rewards openly (Matthew 6:4).
Real-World Example
Anjanette cleaned her church every week without recognition. When the pastor needed a trustworthy assistant, her name came up first. Her hidden service became her open blessing.
