Finding Happiness: Choosing Obedience. Lose the Battle to Win the War
In life, we face countless choices—some small, some life-altering. These choices shape our days, our years, and ultimately, our lives. It’s easy to think that happiness comes from the perfect job, the right relationships, or material possessions. However, true happiness comes from within, from how we respond to the world around us.
Consider the story of Job, a man who faced unimaginable loss and suffering. Despite his trials, Job chose to trust in God’s plan, saying, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him” (Job 13:15, KJV). Job understood that true happiness and strength come from faith in God, not from his circumstances.
Similarly, in our lives, we encounter challenges that test our resolve. We may face setbacks, disappointments, or difficult people. In these moments, we have a choice—to react with anger, bitterness, or despair, or to respond with grace, forgiveness, and faith.
Choosing the latter is not always easy. It requires humility, patience, and trust in God’s plan. However, when we choose to rely on God’s strength rather than our own, we find a deeper, lasting happiness that transcends our circumstances.
This is not to say that we should ignore our emotions or pretend everything is fine. It’s natural to feel sad, angry, or frustrated at times. However, we can choose how we respond to these feelings. We can dwell on them, letting them consume us, or we can turn to God, seeking His comfort and guidance.
Indeed, setbacks can sometimes be a part of God’s plan to redirect us when we are heading in the wrong direction. Just as a pilot may encounter turbulence and be forced to change course, or a person may miss a flight only to later learn that it crashed, God may intervene in our lives to prevent us from harm or lead us toward a better path.
While these redirections can be confusing and painful in the moment, they ultimately reflect God’s predestined plan for our lives. As Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV) states, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Trusting in God’s plan can give us peace in the midst of uncertainty, knowing that He sees the bigger picture and knows what is best for us.

In 1 Kings 3:15-28, two women came to King Solomon, claiming to be the mother of the same baby. They lived together and both had given birth, but one of the babies had died, leading to a dispute over the living child. Solomon, known for his wisdom, proposed to cut the living child in two, giving each woman half.
One woman agreed to this proposal, while the other begged Solomon to give the child to the other woman alive. Solomon then knew the true mother was the one who pleaded for the child’s life, showing her love and willingness to sacrifice her own desires for the child’s well-being.
Solomon gave the child to her, and the story illustrates a mother’s unconditional love and willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice for her child. She made a choice to lose the child to the other woman in order to win the child’s life and ultimately declared the mother. She won the war in another way by making a better choice.
In conclusion, true happiness is not found in external factors but in our internal responses to life’s challenges. By choosing to trust in God’s strength, love and plan, we can find a happiness that is lasting and true, regardless of our circumstances
