Overview of The Gospel of John:

The Gospel of John is written by one of Jesus Christ’s disciples, John, the son of Zebedee. This Gospel is 21 Chapters long.  John is described as the “Disciple of Whom Jesus loved”.  It has been determined by biblical scholars that John wrote The Gospel of John (also known as “According to John”).

It was written around A.D. 80-90, about 50 years after he witnesses Jesus’ earthly ministry under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and as an eyewitness in composing the gospel. He is not John the Baptist. However, in this book, John the Baptist is discussed.

The Gospel of John explains who Jesus Christ is before creation. It establishes his deity as Creator of the World, The Father (I AM), and is the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of God in the flesh.

Its purpose is to explain that even though Jesus is the Creator and God (I AM), believers are to understand that Jesus is the Son of God that came in the flesh and yet while we were sinners, died for our sins and rose again to become Savior of the World-reconnecting us to God. That is why we pray to the father in Jesus Christ’s name.

Defeating death and sin by the shedding of his blood and life, Jesus gives the gift of everlasting life with repentance. That by believing you may have life in his name (20:31)  John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

God is omnipresent meaning he can be in more than one place at the same time. He can be on earth (flesh) and in heaven (spirit) at the same time.

Revelation 19:6  “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thundering, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son, is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Overview of Chapter Eighteen

In this lesson on John Chapter 18, students will examine the events leading to Jesus’ crucifixion, including His betrayal, arrest, and Peter’s denial. This chapter explores Jesus’ willingness to fulfill His mission, despite the betrayal and rejection He faces. Students will reflect on Jesus’ declaration of truth and His purpose, even in the face of suffering, while also understanding the roles of the people involved in these final moments.

In John Chapter 18, Jesus is betrayed, captured, and faces judgment, setting the stage for His crucifixion. After praying for His disciples and all believers, Jesus leads them to a garden near the brook Cedron. Judas, knowing this location, arrives with officers sent by the Chief Priests and Pharisees to arrest Jesus. The High Priest Caiaphas had previously prophesied that one man would die for the nation.

Judas identifies Jesus with a kiss, and Jesus willingly surrenders, showing His acceptance of the path ahead. He is first taken to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, and then to Caiaphas, where He faces questioning. Meanwhile, Peter, who follows Jesus, denies knowing Him three times, as Jesus had predicted.

Jesus is then brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, for judgment. During their exchange, Jesus affirms that He came to bear witness to the truth, and Pilate famously responds, “What is truth?” Despite finding no fault in Jesus, Pilate presents Him to the crowd, offering to release one prisoner for Passover. The crowd chooses Barabbas, a known criminal, over Jesus, leading to His condemnation.

Jesus says to Pilate, that he is in this world to witness to the truth and every one of the truth hears his voice. . John 18:37-40  37 Pilate asks him if he is a king? He judges Jesus according to a custom  38Pilate saith unto him, What is truth?

And when he  said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, “I find in him (Jesus) no fault at all39But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the Passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? 40Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.

Note:  Some English translated bible will state that Barabbas was a murder.  We can assume he was a known criminal.

**Editor’s Note: Jesus’ foreknowledge and willingness to lay down His life reveal His role as the ultimate sacrifice for humanity’s salvation. He experienced betrayal and fully understands the human condition.

Reflection and Discussion

Can you remember a time, you were going to give your support then became afraid and changed your mind?

Sometimes we disappoint ourselves. Relate this to the disciple Simon Peter who loved Jesus but denied him out of fear.

Jesus knows us better than we know ourselves.  Post all comments below in the comment section or on Daily Scripture Explained’s new social media Instagram, YouTube or  Facebook. dailyscriptureexplained.com

Highlights  Chapter of Gospel of John: Chapter Eighteen (KJV)  Answers to Objectives and Quiz.

A. Understand the significance of “Truth” as Jesus declares His purpose to bear witness to it.

1When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.

2And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus oftentimes resorted thither with his disciples.

3Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

5They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

6As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

7Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

8Jesus answered I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:

9That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spoke, Of them which thou gaves me have I lost none.

10Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

11Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

12Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,

13And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.

14Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

B. Learn that Jesus had full knowledge of unfolding events, including Peter’s denial, showing His willing sacrifice for salvation.

15And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.

16But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spoke unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

17Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art, not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith, I am not.

18And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

19The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

20Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.

21Why ask thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.

22And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answer thou the high priest so?

23Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smites thou me?

24Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

25And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.

26One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

27Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

28Then led they, Jesus, from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the Passover.

C. Recognize the meaning behind Jesus’ crucifixion as the Lamb of God, a sacrifice on Passover.

29Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?

30They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.

31Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews, therefore, said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

32That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying what death he should die.

33Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

34Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

D.  The importance of the “Truth”.  Jesus declared he came into the world to witness the truth. In Chapter 17. He prays that the disciples are sanctified by the truth. To be made holy.

37Pilate, therefore, said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth heareth my voice.

38Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

39But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the Passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

40Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

**Editor’s Note: The significance of the type of death Jesus was to die—crucifixion—holds profound meaning both in its physical suffering and its spiritual symbolism. Crucifixion was one of the most brutal forms of Roman execution, reserved for the worst criminals, symbolizing extreme shame and suffering. By enduring this method of death, Jesus took on the full weight of humanity’s sin, experiencing not only physical pain but also the spiritual burden of separation from God, as He bore the sins of the world.

At the Passover, it was a Jewish custom to release one prisoner as an act of mercy. Pontius Pilate, seeing no fault in Jesus, offered the crowd a choice: to free Jesus or Barabbas, a known robber and criminal. The crowd, influenced by the religious leaders, chose Barabbas, rejecting Jesus. This choice symbolizes humanity’s rejection of the innocent Savior in favor of sin and darkness. It underscores the irony of Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God, being condemned to die while a guilty man was set free—a powerful picture of the redemption Jesus would provide through His sacrifice.

This act of choosing Barabbas over Jesus also highlights how Jesus’ death was part of God’s divine plan for salvation. It demonstrates that Jesus willingly took the place of sinners, exchanging His innocence for the guilt of mankind, fulfilling His mission as the ultimate Passover Lamb, who would take away the sins of the world through His sacrificial death.
