Here are my editor’s thoughts—simple, calm, and not judging anyone.
I personally do not attend churches that celebrate Halloween. That is my choice. In many big cities, some churches host Halloween events and allow costumes. I looked into the reasons. I can see both sides. Still, my view is that Halloween is not a day to celebrate in church.
If families choose to mark the day as any other day, it can be a quiet night at home—give the kids a few pieces of candy, watch a clean movie. It’s all about the candy. Do not make a big deal out of it but do explain why you do not celebrate Halloween.
The Bible gives a helpful guide for choices like this:
1 Corinthians 10:23 (KJV): “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.”
Not everything builds us up. We should ask, “Does this help my family grow in Christ?”1 Thessalonians 5:22–23 (KJV): “Abstain from all appearance of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” We want our homes and churches to point to the light, not the dark.
As parents and leaders, we set the tone. Costumes can be cute, but some themes invite darkness. Be mindful of your child’s God-given identity. Teach them to choose what is good, true, and pure. The enemy’s trick is to make wickedness seem harmless or pretend it does not exist. Our guard is wisdom, prayer, and loving guidance.
This is not a rule—just my peaceful conviction. Seek the Lord, talk as a family, and do what honors Jesus.
Halloween mixes fun costumes with themes of fear, death, and magic. Many Christians choose not to celebrate because these themes clash with God’s Word. The Bible warns us to “have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness but rather reprove them” (Ephesians 5:11, KJV) and to “abstain from all appearance of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:22, KJV). God also forbids witchcraft and occult practices (Deuteronomy 18:10–12, KJV). Even if it seems playful, treating darkness as entertainment can dull our hearts to what is holy (Philippians 4:8, KJV).

Churches that avoid Halloween often plan light-filled alternatives—prayer nights, harvest festivals, Scripture costume parties, and service projects. These options keep children safe, point them to Jesus, and teach that we do not need fear to have fun. We can celebrate the God of life, not the symbols of death (John 10:10, KJV).
Why do some churches still join in? Reasons vary:
Outreach: They hope to meet neighbors, offer candy, and share the Gospel .
Cultural pressure: Families expect community events in late October.
Christian liberty: Some apply Romans 14 to treat the day as neutral if used for good, while guarding conscience and avoiding stumbling blocks.
Each church must pray, study Scripture, and decide wisely. If we do anything, let it be done “in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Colossians 3:17, KJV). Parents and leaders should ask: Does this honor Christ? Does it teach children to love light more than darkness? If not, choose a better path—worship, learning, fellowship, and joy.
Action ideas: Host a “Light Night,” memorize Scriptures about God’s protection (Psalm 27:1, KJV), give to a family in need, and share testimonies of Jesus’ power over fear.

A CALL TO SALVATION:
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Romans 10:9-109That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
John 3:5-65Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7
