The Fifth Commandment: “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.” (Exodus 20:12 KJV).

Many people struggle with family relationships. Some feel hurt by parents. Others feel misunderstood or burdened by responsibility. As a counselor, I often hear people ask, “What if my parents were not good parents?” The Fifth Commandment speaks to both honor and wisdom.

The Fifth Commandment requires us to honor and respect those God places in authority, beginning with parents. This commandment is about order, respect, and care within families and society.

What the Fifth Commandment Means

The Bible says, “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee” (Exodus 20:12 KJV).

To honor parents means:

Showing respect in speech and actions

Offering care when needed

Recognizing their role in your life

Honor does not mean agreeing with everything or accepting abuse. It means choosing respect instead of bitterness.

Why This Commandment Matters Today

Psychology shows that unresolved family conflict affects emotional health. Anger, resentment, and lack of boundaries often come from broken parent-child relationships.

God’s command brings healing by teaching:

Respect without idolizing

Boundaries without hatred

Forgiveness without denial

Honor helps people move forward instead of staying stuck in the past.

A Bible Story: Ham Dishonors Noah

In Genesis 9 KJV, Noah became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent. His son Ham saw his father’s shame and told others instead of protecting him. Ham’s brothers, Shem and Japheth, covered their father respectfully.

God judged Ham’s actions. This story teaches that honoring parents includes guarding their dignity, even when they fail.

A Real-Life Counseling Story

I once counseled a woman who carried deep anger toward her mother. She felt justified but also exhausted. As we studied Scripture, she learned that honoring did not mean agreeing—it meant releasing bitterness and showing respect.  She began setting healthy boundaries while choosing respectful speech. Over time, her emotional health improved. Honor freed her heart.

What Honoring Parents Looks Like as an Adult

Honoring parents changes with age:

As children, it includes obedience

As adults, it includes respect and care

In difficult cases, it includes boundaries and prayer

Honor is about attitude and action, not control.

How This Commandment Brings Stability

As a counselor, I see families heal when honor replaces blame. Respect creates peace, even when agreement is not possible.

This commandment also teaches respect for authority in general—teachers, leaders, and elders—helping society function with order instead of chaos.

Grace When Family Relationships Are Broken

God understands broken families. He does not demand pretending pain did not happen. He invites honesty, healing, and wise obedience.

When parents fail, God becomes our perfect Father.
