The Eighth Commandment: “Thou Shalt Not Steal”  (Exodus 20:15 KJV).

Many people think stealing only means taking money or objects. But as a counselor, I often see how stealing can happen in quieter ways—through dishonesty, manipulation, laziness, or taking advantage of others. God’s command protects fairness, trust, and dignity.

The Eighth Commandment requires us to lawfully acquire and keep our own goods and respect the property and rights of others. In simple words, God calls people to be honest and responsible.

What the Eighth Commandment Means

The Bible says, “Thou shalt not steal” (Exodus 20:15 KJV).

This commandment includes:

Not taking what belongs to others

Being honest in work and money

Not cheating, lying, or exploiting

Respecting time, labor, and effort

Stealing damages trust and creates injustice. God values fairness.

Why This Commandment Matters Today

Today, stealing often shows up as:

Cheating on taxes or work hours

Taking credit for someone else’s work

Manipulating people for personal gain

Psychology shows that dishonesty slowly damages self-respect and relationships. People may gain short-term benefits, but they lose peace.

God’s command protects both the victim and the thief.

A Bible Story: Achan’s Hidden Sin

In Joshua 7, Achan secretly took items God had forbidden after the fall of Jericho. Though hidden, his sin affected the whole community. Israel lost a battle because of one man’s dishonesty.

This story shows that stealing is never private. It brings consequences to families, communities, and hearts.

A Real-Life Counseling Story

A man who regularly cut corners at work said, “Everyone does it.” Over time, his guilt grew, and his anxiety increased.

He kept thinking he would get  caught.

When he chose honesty—even when it cost him—his peace returned. Integrity restored his confidence.

What Obeying the Eighth Commandment Looks Like

Obedience includes:

Working honestly

Paying debts when possible

Respecting other people’s time and labor

Being generous instead of greedy

God blesses honesty because it reflects His character.

How This Commandment Builds Trust

Its nice to be able to lay things down and come back and they are still there.

I left a blank money order at a store. left and forgot I left the money order on the counter.

I came back and the clerk had put it behind the counter . He returned it to me.  I was thankful.

God’s command teaches contentment—learning to trust Him for provision instead of taking shortcuts.

Grace for Those Who Have Stolen

Many people carry guilt over past dishonesty. God offers forgiveness through repentance and change. Restoration is possible.
